Antonio Conte claims Manchester City have been “Lucky” so far

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte made a startling claim that Manchester City has been “lucky” so far this season.

Pep Guardiola’s men are running away with the Premier League title after recording a 15th consecutive victory in midweek. Manchester City thrashed Swansea City 4-0 to extend their lead at the top of the table up to 11 points. However, Chelsea manager Antonio Conte believes the Citizens have been fortunate in some of their previous matches.

Conte believes City have been lucky with winning run

Ahead of Chelsea’s match against Southampton, the Blues boss spoke to the press about Manchester City’s unbeaten start to the season and their amazing run of form.

Conte said, “Manchester City is a really good team. To have these 15 wins in a row, you must be also lucky because, in many games, they won at the last minute, or with minutes to go. When you have this type of run, for sure, you must also be a bit lucky. But I repeat: they are deserving this.”

The Italian is under immense pressure, as his team currently lie 14 points behind City in the third position. The Blues stuttered to a 1-0 defeat against West Ham last week and Conte later admitted that their title challenge was almost over. He had to later defend his statement by claiming that he was just being truthful and realistic.

Antonio Conte claims that Manchester City has been fortunate so far this season.

Chelsea host Southampton tomorrow, and Conte will hope to stay in touch with the Sky Blues with a win against the Saints. He said, “We must have great respect for City but at the same time, we must find the right solution to contend. To try to fight them. We have to try to do this. Not just Chelsea, but Manchester United, Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool. The five top teams.”

When questioned about City’s title credentials, Conte said,”Manchester City are not a surprise to me. At the start of the season, all the people said this league was for two Manchester contenders. This is a great team but they were also a great team last season. Then in the transfer market, they reached their first targets.”

He further added, “The time is moving on and City continue to win. We must be realistic. In the last nine games, we won seven games, drawn one and lost one, but the gap improved for City.”

Conte’s men made easy work of Huddersfield in midweek to keep up the pressure at the top of the table.

Author’s take

Indeed, the gap just keeps on widening as Pep Guardiola’s men seem to found the winning formula this season. The Sky Blues created history by winning their 15th consecutive fixture in midweek. In a league where there are three or four teams always gunning for the championship, City has somewhat created a monopoly in England this season. I agree with Conte’s claims of City being fortunate in some fixtures, but luck or not, Manchester City are clearly better than every team in the division at the moment.
