Terry Gibson: Zinedine Zidane depends too much on Cristiano Ronaldo

Terry Gibson believes that Cristiano Ronaldo’s scoring problem is becoming a problem for Real Madrid who hasn’t had a great start to the season.

Cristiano Ronaldo missed his penalty but scored from the rebound against Malaga on Saturday to ensure that Real Madrid gets all three points. The goal was only Ronaldo’s second of the season in the league, while his fellow teammate Karim Benzema has scored the same number of goals in the league. Terry Gibson believes that Zidane’s over-dependence on Ronaldo for scoring goals is becoming a problem for his side.

He believes that Zidane is over-relying on Ronaldo. One of the major problems we’ve observed this season is that Toni Kroos and Luka Modric are missing lots of passes and there is not much movement in the opponent’s half. The Sky Sports football expert, Gibson said in an interview, “They are over-egging the fact that they are guilty of not scoring the goals they should have done this season so they are shooting at every opportunity, and the main culprit is Ronaldo.”

It’s becoming like the only thing that matters for Real Madrid is Ronaldo scoring, when it isn’t. The biggest issue for them is winning games and having some sort of creative style and pattern of play, which at the moment, with the changes Zinedine Zidane is making, he is relying purely on individual ability.”

“He is relying on Ronaldo having 20 shots a game and Benzema picking up the pieces, he is not thinking about Ronaldo’s shot when he could have crossed or passed. It’s become a real feature of their game.

“The emphasis is on Ronaldo to score the goals. He has taken that responsibility too far, shooting from everywhere, he’s shooting from distance and they are going high, wide, and that’s the reason we are not seeing a definitive pattern from Real Madrid in terms of possession and full-backs having time to get into attacking positions. It’s hit and miss from Real Madrid.”

With Real Marid fourth in the La Liga points table, eight points behind of their arch-rivals, Barcelona who lead the table at the moment but things could change. While the La Liga season does go on break during December, fatigue is likely to catch up with them, especially with FIFA Club World Cup in December. Gibson further added: “They are hanging on in there. They seem to think if they score loads of goals against Malaga and APOEL then everything will be ok. I am not so sure, there are bigger issues.

Author’s Take-

Zinedine Zidane’s over-dependence on Ronaldo is becoming a problem for his side. They are yet to play good quality football this season and lack the passion to win, something they had in spades last season. In a season that seemed so easy for Real Madrid, they eased to the victory in La Liga and showed their individual strengths during the knockout stages of Champions League. Zidane’s over-dependence on Ronaldo means that he is focusing more on individual quality rather than the team’s collective quality.
