Notts County ‘cult Hero’ , Shola Ameobi Wins Goal Of The Season

Nigerian and Ex-Newcastle forward Shola Ameobi was given the goal of the season by Notts County for his spectacular strike against Colchester

The former Super Eagles striker has found another rent of life at Meadow Lane since landing back in January and has hit four goals in 16 games as Ex- colleague Kevin Nolan lead Notts County to League Two safety

The 35-year-old goal against Chesterfield on April 1st was voted the goal of the season by fans via web-based networking media – in spite of the fact that it’s believed Newcastle fans may have helped with the majority of the votes.

The wonderful goal deemed the best of the season came in the first half when Ameobi, on the edge of the box controlled the ball noticeable all around and hit it on the volley leaving the goalkeeper wondering “What the hell”.

Sports writer Leigh Curtis said: “Shola Ameobi is now a firm cult hero. He’s only been here since the end of January, but Shola Ameobi is certainly a player who has become a firm favourite with the home fans. That was proven by the fact he claimed the goal of the season award for his flick and volley that he blasted in against Colchester.

“He was up against some tough competition, but it just shows you the esteem in which he is held at Meadow Lane.
