Arsenal seriously interested in £20m goalkeeper who almost replaced David De Gea at Man Utd

Arsenal are now said to be considering a move for a goalkeeper who once almost replaced David De Gea at Manchester United.

Since David Raya’s arrival in north London last summer, it’s become increasingly clear that Aaron Ramsdale will no longer play first team football.

Initially it was pitched as if the pair were level in standing, competing for the number spot which could go either way.

However, the former Brentford man was obviously Mikel Arteta’s preferred choice from the off, and that opinion was justified.

Even if his arrival wasn’t necessarily a popular one, Raya improved Arsenal – a more consistent presence for the back line.

Sadly, that does mean it’s very likely that Ramsdale will seek pastures new this summer, with Newcastle United said to be readying a bid.

Consequently, Arsenal will need to bring in a replacement at the Emirates, someone who can push Raya and play to a similar level when needed.

And according to De Telegraaf in the Netherlands, that man could be Feyenoord’s Justin Bijlow.

Arsenal and Liverpool interested in Dutch international goalkeeper Justin Bijlow

To date, 26-year-old Bijlow has spent his whole career at Feyenoord, and has risen to international reckoning.

Bijlow has eight caps for his country and will head to the Euros this summer, even if he’s unlikely to be first choice.

But via the report mentioned, scouts from both Arsenal and Liverpool have been in the stands for four of Feyenoord and Bijlow’s Champions League games this season.

The Arsenal hierarchy are said to want to make a swift decision in the coming weeks, and desire a goalkeeper who is almost equal to Raya.

De Telegraaf’s information also details that Justin Bijlow was a strong candidate to replace David De Gea at Man United last season, before Erik ten Hag signed Andre Onana.

Bijlow was said to be available for around £20m at the time, a fee that has probably now risen.

Replacing Ramsdale will be a delicate situation for Arsenal, given they’ll need to find a keeper willing to be a number two, but also good enough to start when needed.

It’s no easy task, and perhaps Stefan Ortega, who is doing that job brilliantly at Manchester City, will eventually even get tired of the role.

All that being said, Arsenal are said to be strong favourites to sign another Dutch talent this summer, one likened to Dennis Bergkamp.
