Arsenal stance on Kai Havertz role now revealed as Mikel Arteta plots new striker signing

Arsenal have a clear plan for Kai Havertz whilst Mikel Arteta is keen to bolster his ranks with a new striker this summer.

Kai Havertz really found his feet at Arsenal in the second half of the campaign after he established himself as a striker.

The Gunners paid £65 million to prise the German away from Chelsea in the recent summer transfer window. However, he looked bereft of confidence when he first came into Mikel Arteta’s squad.

The 24-year-old took some time to settle at the Emirates Stadium. Arteta initially planned to reinvent Havertz as a midfielder at Arsenal, but the German never looked particularly comfortable in the role.

Havertz came in for plenty of criticism in his early days at Arsenal. However, when he was given the chance to lead the line on a regular basis after the turn of the year, he finally found his groove.

The 44-cap Germany international has been in scintillating form in recent months. Arsenal fans were delighted with what Havertz produced over the course of the run in.

He was able to sign off his season in style on Sunday, as he netted the late winner in the 2-1 win over Everton at the Emirates Stadium.

Although the Gunners missed out on the Premier League title this season, Havertz has since promised Arsenal fans that “big” things are still to come. He is also set to be a key figure in Arteta’s plans over the coming campaign.

However, the Spanish coach is still keen to sign another striker.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano in his Daily Briefing, Arsenal will look to secure the services of another goalscorer this summer. However: “Arsenal also do not view this as a problem for Kai Havertz, who started out playing in midfield for them when he joined last summer, but who ended the season in really strong form as a striker.

“Havertz can play as 9, but also in other positions and his versatility is one of the reasons why they decided to bring him in. When you want to be competitive on all fronts, these kinds of players are absolutely needed.”

Why Arsenal still need another striker despite emergence of Kai Havertz

This suggests that Arteta may still revisit his plans to use Havertz in the middle of the park. However, even if the manager sticks with using the former Chelsea man at the top of the pitch, cover and competition for the player will still be needed.

Neither Gabriel Jesus or Eddie Nketiah were able to effectively lead the line on a regular basis for Arsenal this season. Havertz alone is not enough up front. Although he was very impressive, Arsenal still need more firepower.
