Martin Odegaard becomes only player to do one thing twice in Premier League since 2016/17

Although Arsenal weren’t quite able to deliver a Premier League title at the Emirates today, Martin Odegaard did achieve another incredible individual feat.

Mikel Arteta’s side showed their strong character once again to come from behind and beat Everton, but ultimately it wasn’t enough.

Manchester City, as expected, won convincingly at home to West Ham United, and Phil Foden seemed to settle things very early on.

But regardless of the outcome, this Arsenal team deserves a ton of credit, and the signs are still so bright for the future.

Fans at the Emirates will have also been delighted to see Jurrien Timber return to first team action – his first minutes since the opening day of the season.

No one can rightfully accuse Arsenal of ‘bottling’ their title push, they went every step of the way with City.

That being said, Odegaard’s leadership and quality on the pitch has proved a key reason as to why Arsenal have been able to sustain this level.

Martin Odegaard matches incredible pressing record for second season in a row at Arsenal

Of course, Odegaard’s contributions aren’t just limited to playmaking these days, he’s also Arsenal’s leader when it comes to the press.

And via Squawka, who shared the stat on X during today’s win over Everton, Odegaard repeated an incredible total he also managed to reach last season.

Since the start of the 2016/17 campaign, only one player has won possession in the final third of the pitch more than 40 times in a single Premier League campaign.

That was Martin Odegaard last season, and after his stellar Everton performance today, he’s now done it twice.

A remarkable feat for a player who isn’t known first and foremost for his ability to win the ball, but it’s something that has improved with each passing game.

It often feels as if Arsenal are set up in something of a 4-4-2 without the ball these days, with their captain right up alongside Kai Havertz.

And no matter what additions Arteta decides to make over the summer, that’s unlikely to change.

That being said, once the dust settles from today’s disappointment, there will be a focus on how Arsenal can go one step further next season.

But unfortunately they may have just been dealt a blow in their pursuit of one key transfer target this summer.
