Paul Merson thinks £100m Mikel Arteta target takes Arsenal to ‘another level’

Paul Merson has now told Arsenal to sign a £100m transfer target of Mikel Arteta as the player would take the Gunners to ‘another level’ if brought to Emirates Stadium.

Chiefs in north London are already hard at work establishing any plans for the summer sales. Arteta has enjoyed another successful season in charge of Arsenal but they are likely to end it without a major trophy. He has only lifted the FA Cup in 2019/20 since taking over in 2019.

Arsenal have now fought Manchester City for the Premier League title in back-to-back terms but need a final day miracle. Liverpool also kicked the Gunners out of the FA Cup in the third round, while Bayern Munich booted them out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals.

Paul Merson thinks Alexander Isak would take Arsenal to ‘another level’

It was the first time that Arsenal featured in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 14 years. Yet Arteta wants to add to Arsenal’s trophy cabinet and now sees scope to strengthen in various positions. But Merson believes Arteta ought to target a striker like Alexander Isak.

Isak is on Arteta’s radar and The Independent even reports he is Arsenal’s No1 striker target for this summer. The Gunners coach believes the 24-year-old would offer plenty of positives at Emirates Stadium. But Newcastle United and coach Eddie Howe are very loath to sell Isak.

So, The Sun reports Arsenal are willing to pay Newcastle £100m for Isak and fend off a rival pursuit by Tottenham Hotspur. Doing so could delight Highbury hero Merson, who believes Isak can take Arsenal to ‘another level’ and might not be opposed to leaving St James’ Park.

Merson has told Sportskeeda: “[Newcastle] need to look to keep their players as teams are going to be sniffing around for Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes.

“They are a massive team. But I wouldn’t be surprised if some of their stars moved on to win trophies. If Arsenal sign a striker like Isak, I think they go to another level.”

Isak currently possesses winners’ medals from lifting the DFB-Pokal with Borussia Dortmund in 2016/17 and the Copa del Rey with Real Sociedad in 2019/20. But he only played for four minutes in the quarter-final of BVB’s route to winning the German equivalent of the FA Cup.

But the striker earned a winners’ medal on merit when Real Sociedad won the Copa del Rey. He started in six and appeared in all eight of their matches, whilst scoring seven goals as the tournament’s top scorer. Isak also scored twice to beat Real Madrid 4-3 in the quarter-finals.

Arsenal securing Isak’s transfer may, therefore, see the Swede and Arteta add more trophies to their respective collections. The Gunners are preparing a sky-high bid for the Solna-born star after he scored 24 goals this term. He has scored 20 goals in 29 Premier League games.
