Tottenham star claims 'responsibility' for moment that may have cost Arsenal the title

One Tottenham Hotspur star has now accepted “responsibility” for one thing which may prevent Arsenal from being crowned champions.

Arsenal fans will have been desperate to see their arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur win on Tuesday evening.

The Gunners need Manchester City to drop points in order for them to stand any chance of being crowned champions themselves.

Such is the extent of the animosity between Arsenal and Spurs, many Tottenham fans actively celebrated falling behind against Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side ultimately secured a 2-0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, there was one moment in second half of that match when the Gunners will have thought that their dreams were about to come true. With Spurs just 1-0 down, Son Heung-min was played through on goal in the 85th minute.

The forward is a clinical finisher, and has 17 Premier League strikes to his name this season. However, with only Stefan Ortega to beat, the 31-year-old fluffed his lines and fired his shot straight at the goalkeeper.

Only a few minutes after this opportunity to equalise was squandered, Manchester City doubled their advantage as Erling Haaland converted from the penalty spot.

The South Korea international has now apologised for his failure to score. As quoted by The Standard, he said: “I’m also human. The keeper made a really good decision and made himself really big. But I take the responsibility not to score that big chance for the team, because the team was working really hard and trying to get a good result.”

Not only did Son’s miss cost Spurs, but it also cost Arsenal their chance to take charge of the Premier League title race, too. Had Tottenham equalised against Manchester City, and held on for the draw, then Mikel Arteta’s side would now be heading into Sunday’s clash with Everton with destiny of the title in their own hands.

What Arsenal must do to win the title now

The Gunners must now beat the Toffees, whilst relying upon West Ham United to take points off of the reigning champions.

Arsenal cannot underestimate the threat that Everton pose. Sean Dyche’s team are well-organised defensively and have the capacity to pull off an upset at the Emirates Stadium.

Meanwhile, all eyes will be on the Hammers. Arsenal fan Piers Morgan has taken solace from a conversation he recently held with David Moyes. The West Ham manager will be keen to end his tenure on a high.
