Richard Keys hails Arsenal ‘Rolls Royce’ who was ‘wasted’ by Arteta earlier this season

Broadcaster Richard Keys has now changed his tune on one Arsenal star who he took aim at earlier in the campaign.

Declan Rice has been a revelation for Arsenal this season.

However, in the first half of the campaign, Richard Keys did not feel that Mikel Arteta was getting the best out of the midfielder. Keys coined the nickname Declan ‘Nice’ as he felt the player’s cutting edge was being dulled by Arsenal’s style of play.

However, as the season has gone on, the former West Ham United man has become an ever more influential figure for the Gunners, particularly in the final third.

The 25-year-old has now enjoyed his best season in front of goal of his career so far, as he has racked up 7 strikes and 10 assists in 49 appearances, across all competitions.

There is now a debate over what Rice’s best position in this Arsenal team is, as he has excelled as both a No. 6 and No. 8 this season.

The presence of Jorginho at the base of the midfield, and the effective partnership that he and Rice forged, was the key to unlocking the England man’s attacking potential. With Jorginho in the side, Rice was freed up to be more aggressive and progressive with his play.

Rice now has his sights set on becoming the best box-to-box midfielder in the world, able to make his presence felt at both ends of the pitch.

Keys has hailed the development of the player’s role at Arsenal. Writing on his personal blog, he stated: “Rice is a Rolls Royce. I said as much earlier in the season when I blasted him for being Declan Nice. He was tippy-tappying about in midfield…playing sideways and backwards.

“That’s not his game. I know it’s what he was being asked to do, but it was frustrating to see such a talent being wasted.

“Arsenal have looked so much better when they’ve played with Jorghino or – freeing Rice to get involved all over the pitch.”

Mikel Arteta must build on Declan Rice development this summer

Jorginho has now signed a new Arsenal contract, keeping him at the club until the end of next season, meaning his partnership with Rice is set to continue.

Arteta will also look to add to his midfield contingent this summer, and he must do so with the task of finding an ideal long-term partner for the 52-cap England international in mind. It has become clear this season that Rice can shine brightest when fielded alongside a player who allows him to play in an unshackled, all-action fashion.
