Alan Smith labels Arsenal star as ‘weak point’ after ‘almighty mess’ at Wolves

Arsenal hero Alan Smith thinks there is ‘no doubt’ about where the ‘weak point’ is in Mikel Arteta’s side after one Gunners player produced an ‘almighty mess’ at Wolves.

The north London club travelled to Molineux this Saturday night looking to get their Premier League title bid back on track. Manchester City playing Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final left the door open for Arsenal to return to the top of the table after they lost against Aston Villa.

Arsenal can also open an advantage over the Citizens with Chelsea visiting Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night. Manchester City are not back in top-flight action until Thursday when they visit Brighton & Hove Albion. Yet Wolves refused to roll over to Arsenal over the early stages.

Alan Smith slams Arsenal ace Jakub Kiwior for his defending at Wolves

Wolves enjoyed plenty of the ball as Arsenal struggled to create clear-cut chances and even enjoyed the first opening. A mistake from Jakub Kiwior let Joao Gomes sneak in behind the away backline at Molineux. Yet the post came to the Gunners’ rescue on the half-hour mark.

Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes initially intercepted Jose Sa’s hopeful ball forward from the edge of Wolves’ area. Yet Gomes Caught Kiwior ball watching to steal possession and set about running into Arsenal’s box. But David Raya would, just, fingertip the ball onto the post.

The manner in which Gomes caught Kiwior out frustrated Smith, who instantly branded the 24-year-old as Arsenal’s weak link against Wolves. Arteta felt forced to start the centre-half as his left-back over Oleksandr Zinchenko, with Takehiro Tomiyasu ruled out due to a knock.

Smith said on Sky Sports Main Event (20/4, 20:00): “There’s no doubt where the weak point is in that Arsenal defence and it’s Kiwior at left-back. [He] makes an almighty mess of this, really does. He’s in control [and] Joao Gomes picks his pocket.”

Arteta recalled Kiwior to the Arsenal defence for their trip to Wolves having picked Tomiyasu at Bayern Munich for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final defeat. But the 25-year-old could not retain the role at Molineux after he sustained a knock at Allianz Arena.

Zinchenko was available to Arteta, however, yet the Arsenal boss chose against recalling the natural left-back. The 27-year-old dropped out of the line-up in Bavaria after starting in their defeat against Aston Villa last Sunday. Kiwior had not featured in Arsenal’s last four matches.

So, Kiwior might, perhaps, argue that Gomes caught him out as the Poland international was out of sync with playing in an unnatural position. But Arteta has now trusted Kiwior to start as their left-back in 11 of the Arsenal defender’s 18 Premier League outings so far this term.
