Arsenal wonderkid now equals 14-year record after scoring five in remarkable performance

Arsenal youngster Chidozie Obi-Martin has caught the eye in the Hale End Academy after an outstanding campaign at youth level.

The 16-year-old striker has emerged as one of the brightest talents in Arsenal’s youth setup, and is thriving in Jack Wilshere’s under-18 side.

Wilshere’s team travelled to play West Ham today, and ended up demolishing the hosts by an even bigger scoreline than the senior side managed in February.

The young Gunners remarkably won 8-1, and Obi-Martin was the star of the show, as he scored an incredible five goals.

Arsenal went 4-0 up in 40 minutes, with the striker scoring all four times, with his initial hattrick coming in a 13 minute spell.

Osman Kamara also added a brace, with Dan Casey finding the scoresheet as well, before Obi-Martin then hit a fifth goal with a penalty late on.

This was his 20th goal in 14 games in the Under-18 Premier League, and incredibly, his 16th in his last five games in the competition. This was the third time in this five-game stretch that he has scored more than four in one game, and was his first five-goal haul of the season.

Obi-Martin is now on 20 goals for the season, and this is the first time an Arsenal schoolboy has reached this total at youth level since Rhys Murphy in 2006-07.

Murphy spent most of his career in the English lower leagues after breaking through as a promising talent for Arsenal, scoring 20 to break into the reserve sides before joining Brentford on loan.

Obi-Martin has now equalled his record, with four games remaining in the season, and is on course to set a new height that many will struggle to reach.

Given his incredible form, he should now be given a chance in the under-21 sides, as it is clear that he is a level above his peers at his current level, and it is perhaps best for his development that he makes the step up now.

The attacker was recently linked with Borussia Dortmund, as his goalscoring antics have caught the eye, but he has claimed that his main ambition is to succeed with Arsenal, and if he continues to develop well, the club may have a future gem on their hands.
