ESPN pundit Craig Burley believes that Arsenal are weaker this season with David Raya and Kai Havertz in the team.

Arsenal spent big this summer, splashing out £65 million to secure the services of Kai Havertz from Chelsea. Goalkeeper David Raya was then picked up on an initial season-long loan deal from Brentford.

The Gunners signed Raya despite already having Aaron Ramsdale at the club, and are expected to pay £27 million to make his stay at the Emirates Stadium permanent. 

A few weeks ago, Raya usurped Ramsdale in the pecking order, and started the game against Chelsea on Saturday. However, the 28-year-old had a nightmare at Stamford Bridge. His distribution was poor throughout and he was caught off his line horribly for the Blues’ second goal.

It was a bold move for Arteta to swap Raya in for Ramsdale in his regular starting XI. The 25-year-old England man is a fan favourite and had done little to deserve losing his place. Pundits have suggested that Arteta has caused unnecessary drama with the decision. 

David Raya and Kai Havertz decisions dogging Mikel Arteta

It was another risky call to sign Havertz. The 24-year-old German didn’t exactly shine in his time at Chelsea. What’s more, he is now generally being used in a midfield role at Arsenal, whereas he used to lead the line for the Blues.

Havertz was named on the bench for the visit to Stamford Bridge. Whilst there have been moments of quality, he has failed to hit the ground running for his new club.

Craig Burley feels that these transfer and selection decisions will backfire on Arteta. Speaking on ESPN, he said, “the two big talking points of the summer…Havertz and Raya…are making Arsenal weaker and not stronger. One, Havertz, has been taken out of the team already and the other we will see. Arsenal are a poorer defensive side with Raya instead of Ramsdale.”

Ultimately, if Raya and Havertz come good, Arteta will be hailed for his management. The Spanish coach has staked a lot on these two choices, though. He needs them to pay off.
