Arsenal hero Merson now believes £40m reported Arteta target would be a ‘great’ transfer

Arsenal hero Paul Merson believes Pedro Neto would be a ‘great addition’ at Emirates Stadium, amid manager Mikel Arteta targeting the Wolves star’s transfer for January.

The 23-year-old has been in phenomenal form under coach Gary O’Neil at Molineux thus far this season. Neto went into the October international break having offered Wolves one goal and five assists in the Premier League. He has also started all eight of their fixtures this term.

Neto has only failed to record an official goal involvement against Manchester City in his last six appearances. But the five-cap Portugal talent did create Wolves’ opening effort as Ruben Dias diverted the attacker’s cross home. Neto would not register an assist for Dias’ own goal.

Arteta is interested in Neto’s transfer from Wolves to Arsenal in January

Neto showed blistering speed to run away from Phil Foden and Nathan Ake before drilling a cross into Ederson’s area. He has been a true live wire on Wolves’ wing under O’Neil to drag his career back on track. Neto struggled for form last season after surgery on an ankle injury.

Now, what Neto has offered under O’Neil has Arteta interested in the Wolves gem’s transfer to Arsenal in January. Football Transfers even reports that Arteta is leaning more toward the transfer of Neto than a deal for Ivan Toney. He feels the Gunners need the Portuguese more.

Arteta believes the injury problems that Bukayo Saka has sustained in recent weeks highlight his need for wide reinforcements. So, he wants to sign Neto to ease some of the burden off Saka’s shoulders. But Arsenal only value Neto at £40m and Wolves want £70m for a transfer.

Merson thinks Neto would be a ‘great addition’ under Arteta

Wolves may yet increase their asking price before the January sales start, should Neto keep up his scintillating form, too. But Arteta is a long-term fan of the forward Merson now thinks would be a ‘great addition’ for Arsenal. He will also be ‘surprised’ if Neto is not on the move.

“Neto now looks like the excellent player we all expected him to become,” Merson has told Sportskeeda. “Before his injury, he was like a speedboat without a driver – he was beating players for fun but there was no end product. He was making the wrong decisions too often.

“With the way Neto’s playing now, I’d be surprised if he’s still at Wolves at the end of January. Apart from Liverpool, I don’t think there’s a top team that wouldn’t be interested in him. He’d be a great addition to Arsenal with the way they rely on their wingers.”
