Champions League winner now named as Wenger's 'worst signing' ever at Arsenal

Arsene Wenger made some incredible signings during his 22-year spell in charge at Arsenal, but also some questionable ones and one particularly bad one has now been highlighted as his worst ever.

Arsenal have made some transfer market mistakes since his departure, with the likes of Nicolas Pepe, Lucas Torreira, Sokratis and Alex Runar Runarsson all disappointing, but there were some in Wenger’s final years which proved even more disastrous.

Shkodran Mustafi and Sead Kolasinac were perhaps the biggest failures from Wenger’s final two years in charge, but a player from his earlier years at the club was arguably even worse.

Wenger’s worst signing

Speaking on his YouTube channel Inside Arsenal, journalist Charles Watts named defender Mikael Silvestre as Wenger’s Worst Signing of them all.

“This is the undoubted Worst signing in Arsenal’s history, for me, 100%,” Watts stated.

“It literally sends shivers down my spine. Mikael Silvestre. He is the worst, worst signing that Arsene Wenger ever made. He was so bad, he was awful.”

Silvestre joined Arsenal in the summer of 2008 for around £750k, with Wenger hijacking a deal which would have seen the Frenchman join Manchester City.

The then-31-year-old was a player with over 350 appearances for Manchester United, with five Premier League titles and a Champions League under his belt, and many thought that he could bring some experience to Arsenal’s youthful defence.

However, two seasons of watching the World Cup finalist at the Emirates were enough before he was released. Although he scored three times, his 43 appearances were an absolute nightmare filled with ridiculous errors, making Arsenal’s already fragile defence even worse.

Silvestre would go on to drop disastrous performances in Arsenal’s Champions League semi-final matches against his former club Man United, adding insult to injury after what was nothing short of a complete failure of a signing.

Although Arsenal have had more expensive flops, Silvestre arguably goes down as the worst given just how bad he was relative to his experience and trophy haul.
