'Someone like..': Journalist claims £60m Arsenal target 'would be an upgrade' on Nketiah

Arsenal are among the clubs who have been linked with a move for Brentford striker Ivan Toney, with the attacker set for a move soon.

Toney is currently serving a ban which will end in January, and if he does not move in the winter window, he will certainly move in the summer.

The 27-year-old scored 20 Premier League goals last season, and may be viewed as someone who can bring a clinical edge, as well as physicality, to the Arsenal attack.

Arseblog host and journalist Andrew Mangan has now claimed that Toney would be an upgrade on striker Eddie Nketiah, therefore making him a valuable addition to the squad.

Toney an upgrade on Nketiah?

Speaking on the Arseblog Arsecast Extra Podcast, Mangan stated that the Brentford star would be an upgrade on Nketiah, who has scored twice this season.

“Common sense tells me that someone like Toney would be an upgrade on Eddie [Nketiah] in our squad, with all due respect to Eddie,” he stated.

Nketiah earned himself an England callup with his strong performances at the start of the campaign, but his goals have dried up in recent weeks.

Is Toney a worthwhile signing?

With a reported asking price of £60m and no match practice for over six months, Toney would be a massive gamble for Arsenal in January.

Arsenal are well stocked upfront with Gabriel Jesus, Nketiah, Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard, meaning that an extra body would only be necessary if he was a massive upgrade on these options.

Although Toney had a strong campaign last season, it is arguable that he does not raise the level of the team beyond what Gabriel Jesus offers. Nketiah also offers a different tactical option with his pressing and speed, and Havertz offers a large physical presence.

With this in mind, Toney may be a good short term option, but it may not be worth foregoing finding a potentially better forward to sign him at such a high price.
