David Ornstein gives verdict on Arsenal chase for 24-year-old

Journalist David Ornstein has had his say on whether Arsenal will sign Victor Osimhen.

According to Football Transfers, Arsenal are keen to secure the services of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen next summer.

Meanwhile, Calciomercato reported that the Italian outfit are interested in signing Gabriel Jesus from the Gunners. As per The Express, this opens up the outside possibility of a swap deal being conducted in the upcoming January transfer window.

All that his speculation tells us, though, is that the future of Osimhen is most certainly uncertain, and that Arsenal are likely in the market for a new striker, at least to some extent.

Bringing a reliable, top level goalscorer to the Emirates Stadium would be a smart move for Mikel Arteta to make as soon as possible. Jesus is a talented forward, and Hale End academy graduate Eddie Nketiah is a hard-worker, but neither are as reliably ruthless in front of goal as Arteta would want.

Osimhen would certainly solve that problem for Arsenal. The 24-year-old was in prolific form last season, netting 31 times as he fired the Serie A club to the title. Arteta may well have earmarked the Nigerian to come in and have a similar impact at Arsenal.

Of course, such a deal would not come cheap, but the north London club have been willing to spend big in recent transfer windows to bolster their squad in key areas.

Ornstein unconvinced by Osimhen to Arsenal

Despite all this, David Ornstein is not convinced that such a move is on the cards. The Athletic reporter recently said, “in terms of price and profile…I don’t see Arsenal going for Osimhen. I suspect he is on their list, like he will be for all the top sides.”

“As things stand, I don’t think Arsenal are focusing on recruiting a striker in January; my sense is that is more likely to be on the agenda next summer. Things can change, of course.”

“However, right now, Arsenal have Jesus, Nketiah and Havertz, as well as goalscoring contributors like Saka, Martinelli, Odegaard and Trossard. They will hope that serves them well this season and then they can look at the situation subsequently.”

If a new striker is not at the top of Arteta’s shopping list for the winter window, then the Spanish coach must be keen to strengthen elsewhere. That could mean a new right-winger being brought into the club to compete with, and provide back up for, Bukayo Saka.
