Gary Neville now confesses concern over 'erratic' Arsenal duo

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has expressed his concern about Arsenal strikers Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah.

The burden of leading the line for Arsenal this season is expected to be shared between Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah. Whilst £65 million summer signing Kai Havertz can also spearhead the attack, Mikel Arteta seems determined to use him in a midfield role.

As Jesus has had some injury issues so far this season, and has otherwise been needed to provide cover on the flanks at times, Nketiah has been handed the bulk of the opportunities to play in a central role.

The 24-year-old Hale End academy graduate has started seven out of the Gunners’ eight Premier League matches so far this season, scoring twice. Jesus, meanwhile, has been handed two run outs from the bench in the competition as a centre forward, netting once.

In Nketiah, Arteta knows he has a hard-working player who is willing to press and cajole the opposition players whilst they are in possession. However, the £100,000-a-week England man does not possess Jesus’ raw talent.

The £45 million Brazilian brings so much dynamism and unpredictability to Arsenal’s attacking play. The drawback comes in the form of the 26-year-old’s finishing, which is unreliable.

Arsenal duo under the microscope

There is an argument that neither Jesus or Nketiah are quite of the standard required to be the first choice striker tasked with firing the north London club to a Premier League title.

Gary Neville certainly holds this view. Speaking on Stick to Football, the former Manchester United full-back said, “I worry about Nketiah and Jesus. They’re erratic. They’re not wired, are they, to score goals naturally. Instinctively they don’t make the runs that you see goalscorers make.”

“I just look at Jesus, he is quite erratic in front of goal. The work ethic of both of them is brilliant, I just question, at that level, can they win the league without another striker?”

Arteta certainly seems to hold the view that more firepower is needed. According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal are eyeing up a January move for Brentford forward Ivan Toney.

Whatever happens, the Gunners still need Jesus and Nketiah to prove their doubters wrong and deliver this season.
