Darren Bent does not believe Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai or Tottenham Hotspur’s James Maddison would start ahead of Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard in the same squad.

The Reds and Spurs pair have astounded Bent since they joined their respective teams in the summer market. But what they offer under Jurgen Klopp and Ange Postecoglou does not yet overshadow what Odegaard offers Mikel Arteta. Even if Maddison ‘ripped Arsenal to pieces’.

Maddison was one of the best performers during last Sunday’s north London derby as he led Tottenham to a 2-2 draw. The 26-year-old moved to four assists in the Premier League so far this season after the £40m ace created both of Son Heung-Min’s goals at Emirates Stadium.

Bent would start Odegaard ahead of Maddison or Szoboszlai

Son initially drew Tottenham level from Maddison’s cross before beating David Raya again in the second half. Maddison stole possession from Jorginho to tee Son up again. The forward would not waste the sort of chance that Maddison presented Gabriel Jesus in the first half.

Meanwhile at Liverpool, Szoboszlai has scored once through his six Premier League matches since leaving RB Leipzig for £60m. The 22-year-old got his sole goal involvement so far in a 3-0 win over Aston Villa. Odegaard has two goals in six games for Arsenal but no assists yet.

Maddison, then, stands head and shoulders above Szoboszlai and Odegaard with two goals and four assists. Yet Bent would pick the Tottenham playmaker last with the ex-Spurs striker favouring Arsenal captain Odegaard ahead of Liverpool star Szoboszlai and, then, Maddison.

“I’m going [with] start Odegaard, bench Szoboszlai and sell Maddison,” Bent told talkSPORT. “Yeah, Szoboszlai’s been very good. I’ll have to sell Maddison – he ripped Arsenal to pieces!

“I mean, Odegaard is not a new signing. But, certainly, Szoboszlai and Maddison have both been top, top draw.”

Szoboszlai may not have the goal involvements to rival Maddison and Odegaard yet. But his efforts for Liverpool have drawn lavish praise after impressing through the Hungarian’s hard work. Ex-England striker Tash Dowie even claims he ‘reminds me of a young Steven Gerrard’.

Odegaard, meanwhile, is one of Arsenal’s most important players and is invaluable for their performances. While he might not always play the final pass, it is regularly the 24-year-old’s vision that makes chances. The Norway skipper also has a clinical shot from outside the box.
