Report: Arsenal now open to transfer for player Arteta called ‘phenomenal’ in August

Arsenal are now open to sanctioning a transfer for Jorginho when the window opens in January, even after Mikel Arteta recently called the Fenerbahce target ‘phenomenal’.

That is according to Sport Italia, which reports that Fenerbahce will renew their interest in a transfer for Jorginho. The Super Lig side had strived to get his services in the summer sales. But Arteta was loath to see the Italian leave Emirates Stadium mere months after his arrival.

Arsenal paid London rivals Chelsea an initial £10m, rising to £12m, in January to sign the 31-year-old. He also moved to north London on an initial 18-month contract with the option of a further year. Jorginho even emerged as a key player after Thomas Partey’s form vanished.

Arsenal are open to a January transfer for Fenerbahce target Jorginho

Yet the summer capture of Declan Rice in a club-record transfer from West Ham United has left Jorginho out of favour. Arteta only gave the Italian his first start of the season as Arsenal beat Brentford in the Carabao Cup. Yet he also awarded the Brazil-born star their captaincy.

Jorginho playing the full 90 minutes at Brentford took him to 165 for the season through six appearances. He also earned 45 of his minutes against Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday after replacing Rice at half-time. But Jorginho arguably cost them a win in the north London derby.

Now, Arsenal are open to sanctioning a transfer for Jorginho in January with the Fenerbahce target out of favour. Emirates Stadium chiefs are loath to watch the Imbituba native leave as a free agent at the end of the season. So, they will listen to offers for his signature in January.

Fenerbahce are on high alert to Jorginho’s likely availability with Yellow Canaries chiefs loath to miss out. The Sukru Saracoglu Stadium outfit had hoped to convince Jorginho to move to Istanbul this summer. So, they are now readying a fresh move for once the market re-opens.

What has Mikel Arteta said about Jorginho this season?

A January transfer is on the cards with Arteta rarely relying on Jorginho at Arsenal so far this season. The 48-cap Italy midfielder also had a nightmare north London derby after replacing Rice following his injury. James Maddison stole possession to free Son Heung-Min to score.

Tottenham often overrun Jorginho in Arsenal’s engine room and Brentford also had some joy overwhelming the Italian on Wednesday. Arteta needed more from the 2020/21 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year at times defensively. But he was not as off the pace as he was last Sunday.

Now, Jorginho may have to play for his future at Emirates Stadium as Arsenal warm to allow a mid-season transfer. Even if Arteta adored what the 2020/21 Champions League winner with Chelsea gave in north London upon leaving Stamford Bridge during the past January sales.

“Jorgi is a phenomenal character,” Arteta stated, via quotes by the Metro, in August. “He has so much experience, everybody respects and loves him, and he is a very particular character as well. He has been really, really, really good for us.”
