Arsenal may have been handed a major injury boost, as midfielder Thomas Partey could return earlier than expected.

The 30-year-old has missed the last few games with injury, and was initially expected to be absent until after the October international break.

However, Partey could now return ahead of schedule for Arsenal’s huge clash against Manchester City on 8th October, and this would be a massive boost for Mikel Arteta.

The Mirror have now reported that Partey could return from his groin injury in time to face Pep Guardiola’s side, and with Man City midfielder Rodri suspended, Arsenal could have the tools to dominate the midfield at the Emirates.

Could Partey start against City?

If he does return in time to rejoin the squad, it remains to be seen whether he will be thrown in from the start.

The Ghana international, who was described as “unbelievable” by former City midfielder Yaya Toure, would be lacking in match fitness, and could be at risk of re-injury.

However, he could be a game-changing option to have in midfield. With Kai Havertz struggling, Partey could return as a defensive midfielder, allowing Declan Rice to push further forward.

With Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri absent, this could be the key to finally beating City at the Emirates for the first time since 2015.

Partey started in the Community Shield draw with City at Wembley, alongside Rice and Martin Odegaard, but has not appeared as a midfielder since, playing in the back four in the opening three Premier League games before picking up his injury.

If he can build up fitness in training prior to the clash, then Arteta may consider throwing him in as a wildcard option to help keep possession further up the pitch. Arsenal have struggled against City for years, and having him and Rice together may be the perfect blend of physicality and technique necessary to gain all three points.
