'Obviously': Arsenal star admits he still has to improve despite great start to the season

Arsenal star Eddie Nketiah has enjoyed this season so far, earning himself an England callup after scoring twice in three starts, but he has admitted that he cannot rest on his laurels.

The striker has led the line superbly, initially stepping in following an injury to Gabriel Jesus, and there has been a dramatic improvement in his all-round play.

18 months ago, Nketiah was seen as a simple penalty-box poacher, who would likely leave the club. Now, he has earned international recognition, and provides genuine competition for Jesus as a central striker.

Speaking in an England press conference following his inaugural callup, he has admitted that whilst he is impressed with his progress, there is still plenty more to do.

“I think obviously I’m a much better player than I was obviously, maybe two or three years ago. So that’s really nice. And obviously I think I’m coming in at a good time, obviously in a good moment,” he stated.

“I feel confident, I feel ready, and I know I’m gonna continue to improve, that’s the thing, I’m still young, I’m humble enough to know I’m obviously not the finished article.

“So coming away with these players and being able to show my quality and learn from them will be good for me to improve and continue to take those steps in my career”

Nketiah’s brilliant mentality

Nketiah might well be one player Mikel Arteta is immensely proud of, given the way in which he has improved under his coaching, and he has set an example to other young players at the club.

Despite having to compete with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and now Jesus and Kai Havertz for a starting role, he has never shown his frustration at not having a starting spot.

Every time he is asked to step into the side, he delivers an exceptional work-rate, and has now delivered a lot of crucial goals and moments. The improvement in his play has seen him become a well-rounded forward capable of making an impact in and out of the squad, and there is still plenty more to come from him.
