Report: Arsenal now talking to PL club over exit of 'phenomenal' player

Arsenal are in talks with Nottingham Forest over a deal for goalkeeper Matt Turner, who could be allowed to leave the club this summer.

The 29-year-old only arrived last year from New England Revolution, replacing Bernd Leno as the second choice goalkeeper behind Aaron Ramsdale, but could now move to Steve Cooper’s side should they fail to sign Dean Henderson from Manchester United.

The USA international has had limited experience in an Arsenal shirt, conceding four goals and keeping four clean sheets in seven games, and was surprisingly left on the bench when the Gunners were eliminated from the Europa League on penalties against Sporting Club De Portugal, having played the first leg of the knockout tie.

The Athletic have reported that there are talks ongoing over a permanent deal, but the two clubs remain far apart in their valuations of the player, and Arsenal are exploring a deal for Brentford’s David Raya to replace him.

Should Arsenal sell Turner?

Although a solid backup option, it seems highly unlikely that Turner will ever truly compete with Ramsdale to become the number one pick, and given that there is potential to make a healthy profit on him, a sale to Forest this summer could be the best move for all parties.

If Arsenal do sign Raya as a result of Turner’s sale, it would indicate that Mikel Arteta is keen on having a more competitive roster of goalkeepers, rather than continuing the status quo where Ramsdale is the number one and Turner is the clear backup.

The USA number one not being picked for Arsenal’s knockout tie against Sporting perhaps indicates that Arteta does not fully trust him in crucial games like he could with a more proven option like Raya, despite having described Turner as “phenomenal” during the Europa League group stages.

Turner does have the quality to play regularly at Nottingham Forest, and if Arsenal can turn a sizeable profit on their backup goalkeeper, it would represent excellent business for the club.
