Former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil’s vision on the pitch is among the best in the world, but it looks like the German has a tremendous eye for young talent as well.

When Arsenal went over to America for our pre-season in the summer of 2019, young Joe Willock stepped up big time. He played out of his skin to help us beat Bayern Munich, and many viewed him then as the next big thing.

Willock’s progression has been fairly slow since, but the young Englishman has come to life this season. He has been absolutely phenomenal for Newcastle United on loan, scoring seven goals in just 10 starts.

The 21-year-old also set the record for being the youngest player in the history of the Premier League to score in six consecutive games, and there is no doubt in people’s minds now about the fact that he is a big player.

Ozil predicted this two years ago. The German hailed Willock’s performance against Bayern in 2019 and claimed that the Englishman will go on to become a ‘big player’ for Arsenal in the future.

He told Arsenal.com: “He [Willock] knows what he can do, so he is not arrogant on the pitch but he is, how can we say, he believes in himself. Especially yesterday against Bayern Munich, against a big club, he shows his quality.

“We are happy to have him. He was strong last year as well so, of course, if you really work with the first team together always, you feel more comfortable and you believe in yourself more.

“I think this season he can show his quality and I think he can help us this season.  If he stays healthy and believes in himself, I think he will be a big player.”

Should Arsenal keep Joe Willock?

Multiple reports have claimed today that Arsenal are willing to cash in on Willock if an offer arrives this summer. That has left some fans fuming after seeing how well the young midfielder has played over the last few weeks.

Willock has almost single-handedly saved Newcastle United from relegation. He has done so not just by scoring, but scoring against the sides who are above Arsenal in the table – Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham, Leicester City and West Ham United.

Arsenal will surely get good money for Willock if we decide to sell him, but it makes no sense whatsoever. He is the only midfielder in our ranks who is capable of scoring regularly, and as we’ve learned this season, that ability is priceless.

Edu and Mikel Arteta will have to make many bold decisions this summer but selling Willock shouldn’t be one of them.
