Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood had a real go at Arsenal star Bernd Leno after the German was at fault for West Ham’s second goal last weekend.

The former Bayer Leverkusen man has almost always been brilliant for us. He has saved Arsenal on multiple occasions, and it no surprise that pundits and the media are firing shots at him after one mistake.

Leno could have definitely done better for that goal and he will be the first one to admit that. However, everybody in front of him went to sleep, and that was the only reason why Jarrod Bowen was able to have a shot at goal.

Sherwood completely disregarded everything else and had a pop at Leno. He claimed that the German is ‘so bad’ and that Emi Martinez – the guy we sold last summer – is a lot better than him.

He said on Optus Sport’s The Analysis Show: “The goalkeeping is shocking.

“Oh he’s so bad Leno, I can’t have Leno. You’ve got the best goalkeeper that Arsenal have had in Martinez, at Aston Villa. You’ve got to stop that mate, it just frustrates me. Terrible!”

The Insider’s View:

The comparisons between Leno and Martinez are always going to be there. Every time one of them makes a mistake, fans of the other keeper will jump up to make their point, which is mostly baseless.

Irrespective of who you think is better, Arsenal did the right thing in the summer.

There was no way either goalkeeper would have settled for a second-choice role. Arsenal had to sell one of them and the only offer we received was for Martinez from Aston Villa. It was a deal that had to be done to maintain the balance.

One shot-stopping error does not change the fact that Leno is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. He has been immense for us ever since he joined us and irrespective of what Sherwood and the rest think, he is a world-class goalkeeper and Arsenal are lucky to have him.
