The William Saliba statistic that will get Arsenal fans excited

Arsenal defender William Saliba is making quite a name for himself out on loan at Nice this season.

The 19-year-old joined the Gunners in the summer of 2019 for £27million, subsequently being loaned back to Saint-Etienne for the remainder of the season, and went on to reach the French Cup final.

He then arrived at the Emirates Stadium last summer to much fanfare, and it was hoped that he’d stake a claim for a first-team place, challenging the likes of David Luiz, Shkodran Mustafi, and Rob Holding at centre-back.

This didn’t turn out to be the case, with Mikel Arteta having other ideas, and in search of first-team football, Saliba completed a loan move to Nice in January.

To date, the young Frenchman has made 10 Ligue 1 appearances for Les Aiglons, plus one in the French Cup, and has done so well that the club named him their Player of the Month for January.

On Friday night, Saliba played the full 90 minutes as Nice ran out 2-1 winners over Rennes.

Even though he did make a mistake for the hosts’ goal, misplacing an out ball to Martin Terrier, who went on to score with a great effort outside the area, he otherwise did really well.

One Saliba statistic that will excite Arsenal fans is that, since joining on loan from Arsenal in January, no opposition player has successfully dribbled past him (Squawka).

Saliba is a young player who’s still refining his game and there will obviously be the odd mistake or flaw to iron out, so it’s a good job he’s doing this at Nice before coming back a much-improved player in the summer.
