Arsenal sent Lucas Torreira out on loan to Atletico Madrid in the summer. The Uruguayan seemed the perfect player for Diego Simeone’s system, but things haven’t quite worked out in the Spanish capital.

Torreira has played a little over 200 minutes for Atleti so far this term. He has started just twice in all competitions, and it now looks like Simeone wants him gone – just two months after he signed him on a season-long loan deal.

TMW claims that Torreira did not meet the Atleti boss’ expectations. The report reveals that he will be leaving Spain in January, and it is up to Arsenal to decide his fate when he returns to the Emirates in a few weeks time.

Torreira has no future at Arsenal

Arteta was clearly never a fan of him. The Arsenal boss handed Torreira just nine starts, and it was evident in the summer that the Uruguayan had no future at the club.

Arsenal tried hard to sell him, but no club could meet our demands. He snubbed a couple of Italian clubs to join Atletico Madrid, but that hasn’t put off Torino. The Turin based outfit are still interested in the Uruguayan, and talks are expected in the coming weeks.

Arteta was quizzed about the situation in his press conference today. The Arsenal boss admitted that the club are dealing with the situation, but refused to reveal if Torreira will return to the Emirates next month.

He said: “We have been dealing with that situation, but again, when the market opens and we have the possibility to bring players in and get players out, whatever we have to do, we will discuss it. I cannot comment on that (whether he’s coming back).” (Arsenal.com)

Torreira is not a bad player by any means. He is a fantastic midfielder who became an instant fan favourite when he arrived from Sampdoria back in 2018.

Unai Emery changing his position affected his form and confidence, and he hasn’t quite been able to recover from that. A permanent exit looks likely in January, but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to keep hold of him, especially if Granit Xhaka is sold.
