The majors’ last four no-hitters (317-320) have all Ended on groundouts to third, marking just the second time in history that four consecutive no-nos ended on the same play.

The Tigers’ July 8 combined no-hitter, Domingo Germán’s June 28 perfecto, and the Astros’ 2022 World Series and regular-season combined no-hitters all ended with third basemen fielding grounders and throwing to first for plays scored 5-3.

That has only happened one other time, when no-hitters 259-262 all ended on strikeouts, though technically two were marked as forward Ks and two were scribbled as backward Ks. The Red Sox’s Clay Buchholz (Sept. 1, 2007) and Jon Lester (May 19, 2008), the Cubs’ Carlos Zambrano (Sept. 14, 2008) and the Giants’ Jonathan Sanchez (July 10, 2009) all ended their no-hitters with strikeouts, with Buchholz and Sanchez catching their victims looking and Lester and Zambrano inducing swings and misses.

The previous record for consecutive 5-3-ending no-nos was two, accomplished twice. The Cleveland Naps’ Addie Joss closed both his 1910 and 1911 no-nos with grounders to third, and the Yankees’ “Sad” Sam Jones and the Boston Red Sox’s Howard Ehmke closed their 1923 no-nos against the Philadelphia Athletics with 5-3 outs.
