Orioles’ Means no-hits Mariners, only batter reached on dropped-ball K

The Baltimore Orioles John Means three the majors’ first no-hitter Wednesday in which the only baserunner, the Mariners’ Sam Haggerty, reached base on a dropped third strike.

Means struck out 12 and walked none, as the Orioles topped the Mariners at T-Mobile Park 6-0. Means faced the minimum 27 batters as Haggerty was caught stealing.

The only known instance of a perfecto being killed on a dropped third strike happened in Korea. On May 23, 1997, the Hanwha Eagles’ Jeong Min-chul no-hit the OB Bears for an 8-0 win at Jeonju Baseball Stadium, with the only runner occurring on a strikeout with that batter taking first.

In was the Orioles’ first no-hitter since July 13, 1991, when Bob Milacki (6 inn.), Mike Flanagan (1 inn.), Mark Williamson (1 inn.) and Gregg Olson (1 inn.) no-hit the Oakland Athletics at Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum for a 2-0 win. To find the Orioles last single pitcher no-hitter, you have to go way back to August 13, 1969, when Jim Palmer no-hit the A’s at Memorial Stadium for an 8-0 win.

The Seattle Mariners were last no-hit on August 3, 2019, when the Houston Astros’ Aaron Sanchez (6), Will Harris (1), Joe Biagini (1) and Chris Devenski (1) combined for a 9-0 no-no at Minute Maid Park.
