Myra Hindley and Ian Brady were convicted for murdering five children aged 10 to 17 (Mirror).

Following the convictions of the Moors Murderers 50 years ago – Ian Brady and Myra Hindley – the living child killer is not revealing the whereabouts of the remains of the two victims. While Hindley died in 2002, the families of the victims fear that the ailing Brady will bring the secrets into his grave.

Brady, presently 78 years old is held in a maximum security mental institution Ashworth Hospital in Merseyside and forced fed to keep him alive. What keeps him from turning the information the police needed?

Investigator Darren Rae held that Brady is ego tripping “because he gets sense of power by refusing to disclose the bodies.” Brady is using his secrets to improve his luck. He kept on horse trading for benefits in exchange for information that could lead authorities to Keith and Pauline.

Personal notes of Brady revealed how obsessed he was with rape and murder. He wrote “Rape is not a crime, it’s a state of mind. Murder is a hobby and a supreme pleasure,” in his notebook. However, despite being lock up in mental asylum, Brady insisted he is not psychotic.

Meanwhile, Hindley confessed before she died she was even worse and more wicked than her partner because she had the understanding to know the difference between right and wrong. She was at Highpoint Prison at Stradishall from 1998 until her death in 2002 aged 60. Before her death, she was diagnosed with heart condition angina, high blood pressure and osteoporosis.

Dr. Tom Clark allowed the documents of Hindley to be out due to public interest. The documents include the prison files and psychological assessment of the convicted murderer. Interviews revealed that she her involvement in the killings was for the “enjoyment of affinity with Brady.”

BUT WHO IS IAN BRADY?

Ian Brady was born Ian Duncan Stewart in January 2, 1938 from Glasgow, Scotland. Father unknown, her mother Peggy was forced to give him up for unofficial adoption. Despite the efforts of his adoptive parents, Brady became a difficult child with hot temper. When he was twelve, he moved with his biological mother and stepfather Patrick Brady. He took his stepfather’s last name to establish belongingness.

However, Brady was unveiling different interests. He grew a strong curiosity with the writings of Nietzsche and attracted to Nazis. He read Hitler’s autobiography Mein Kampf, Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment, Marquis de Sade’s Justine and other books about sadism. He even tried to learn German. He relished tormenting and butchering animals and later started attacking children in his primary school Camden Street Primary School. At 17, he ended at Strangeways Prison for housebreaking and burglary.

In November 1957, after his release from prison, Brady took a job as stock clerk with a Manchester Firm. There he met Myra Hindley.

THE PARTNER-IN-CRIME – MYRA HINDLEY

Myra Hindley was born on July 23, 1942 in Manchester, England. Her grandmother raised her since her parents Bob and Nellie could not afford two children. Bob was physically abusing Hindley.

Despite her poor attendance record in school, Hindley was considered as bright student, enjoyed sports and was part of the swimming team. She was nicknamed “Square Arse” because of her broad hips. She left swimming and blamed herself when her friend Michael Higgins drowned in an accident. She eventually left school and got a typing job at Millwards Merchandising. She was 18 when she met Brady. She fell in love with him, and submit herself to his full control. Brady influenced her and shared his belief on Hitler, Nazis, sadism and murder.

Hindley supported Brady’s ideas on the supreme pleasure of murder and rape.

THE VICTIMS

The couple’s first victim was 16-year-old Pauline Reade. Pauline was walking her way to a local dance on July 12, 1963 when Hindley convinced her to get in her car then brought her to Saddleworth Moor while Brady followed on his motorcycle. They sexually abused and tortured Pauline. Brady cut Pauline’s throat and they buried her.

After the murder, Brady started frequenting gay bars and their relationship was losing steam.

However, Brady turned to Hindley when his craving for killings was taking off again. He wanted someone younger. In November 23, 1963, the child killers took John Kilbride, 12 years old. Brady raped and killed John by strangling him with string. Hindley and Brady smiled for a photograph above John’s burial place.

Brady’s homosexual tendencies which was well supported by Hindley intensified when he continued going for another 12-year old boy Keith Bennet. Like John, Keith was strangled to death on June, 1964.

But Brady wanted much younger, so on December, 1964 Hindley brought him 10-year-old Lesley Ann Downey. The couple brought her to their home and forced her to pose for photos in nude. She was raped, tortured and killed, all which were recorded on tape. Lesley was buried on the Saddleworth Moor.

In October 1965, Brady has another plan. He wanted a new audience in the person of David Smith, the husband of Hindley’s younger sister, Maureen. Brady lured 17-year-old Edward Evans who was known as gay. Brady brought Edward in their home and clubbed the boy with an axe while David was watching. Edward received 14 blows that opened his skull.

Brady told David how they kept their victims in the moors calling it their playground. Out of fear, David helped with the body and had tea with the couple afterwards. When David went home he told his wife and they called police.

Police found the body of Edward in the couple’s home. Authorities visited Saddleworth Moor and discovered the bodies of Lesley and John. However, they could not find the remains of Pauline and Keith.

Brady and Hindley were arrested in October 1965 and convicted for life at Chester Assizes on May 6, 1966.

Authorities searched the Saddleworth Moors for the child killers’ victims (Daily Mail).

Until today, 50 years later, the families of the Pauline and Keith are pleading to Brady to reveal the spots of his victims.
