Margorie McCall was a victim of premature burial during the early 18th century. Her gravestone bear the words Lived Once, Buried Twice.
Margorie grew up in Lurgan. She married a surgeon named John McCall – and lived in Church Place. One day she succumbed into illness and died. At her wake, mourners persuaded her family to take off her wedding ring. The valuable ring would invite grave robbers to desecrate her resting place.
Margorie’s family laid her to rest in Shankill Graveyard. That night, grave robbers exhumed her body. They tried in vain to take the ring from her finger. One robber pull out a knife and meant to cut off the woman’s finger. As the robber drew blood from her, she woke up from her coma-like state she had fallen into. The robbers ran for their lives as the woman climbed out of her coffin and headed for her home.
John still devastated heard a knock at their door. He said “If your mother were still alive, I’d swear that was her knock.” When the door was opened, they found Margorie standing in front in her burial dress. He fainted immediately.
Margorie and John lived longer and had children. When she died, she was buried in her spot in the Shankill Cemetery where her gravestone still stands.
