Scary Stories that will Haunt Us

Many of us have scary stories to tell. Here are paranormal stories shared by Reddit users that will haunt us in our sleep.

Haunted Apartment

Lived in an old two bedroom, three storey walkup for a time in my early 20s in Toronto. A few days after moving in my roommate Mike chides me in the morning for banging on the wall that separated our bedrooms and pacing back and forth across the apartment at night. We just agreed he must have been dreaming or it was sounds from other apartments as I had done no such thing. We agreed that it must have been nothing and left it at that but this became a regular nightly occurrence.

Shortly thereafter I started noticing at certain times in my own bedroom the cloying smell of cheap women’s perfume mixed with a damp musty smell. Imagine an old person’s clothes left on a damp musty basement floor near a litterbox that wasn’t being changed often enough and you get the idea. What made it even weirder is that I would be filled with a sudden horrible sense of foreboding a few moments before the smell would begin.

Mike flaked out and left only 4 months into our 1 year lease which meant I was left footing the rent for the entire place until I could find another roommate. I had decided to try and sleep in his bedroom shortly after he moved to see if things would get better. The very first night I slept in his former room I had an incredibly detailed and realistic nightmare of myself standing in the dimly-lit bathroom of the apartment and cutting my own face with a large shard of glass while staring into the broken bathroom mirror (it was only broken in the dream)

Soon after that I started to hear the loud bangs at night and the flushing of the toilet in the bathroom. Several times the hot water in the bathtub turned on full blast in the middle of the night.

One of the freakier things that happened not too long before I moved is the time I was woken up by the TV blaring Poltergeist on CityTV at about 2 in the morning. At the time that channel would always play movies late at night but the fact that the one time my analog TV (turn a knob to change the channel or the volume, pull a knob to turn it on) turned on by itself at full blast was the time a movie like Poltergeist was playing. – Dicknass

He then ran through the wall and disappeared (supernatural wikia).

The Grey Man

Was around 7 years old and it was near the holidays. The house I grew up in has a downstairs and a basement. So I left my pillow downstairs after a daylong movie binge and went to grab it later that evening.

Grab the pillow and look up, see a man on the other side of the room dressed to the nines just looking around paying no attention to me. Weird thing was he was entirely grey. Head-to-toe, skin color and everything, grey.

I’m staring, jaw wide open, completely petrified. He looks up at me, notices I’m able to see him, and drops his jaw lower than humanly normal almost as if he was screaming at me, but without sound. He then ran through the wall and disappeared.

I wasn’t able to go downstairs if the lights were off until I was a teenager. – Kafoobleflats

My Grandfather

My grandfather was a baaad man. Alcoholic, extremely violent, tried to kill my Grandmother in front of their kids. One of his less horrible acts was abandoning my grandmother with their six kids, all under the age of 12. Some of his kids maintained minimal contact with him. He lived about thirty or forty miles from my grandmother and the two kids who’d stayed in the area.

When he was in his 80s he was hospitalized and then passed away in the middle of the night. In the morning his oldest child, one of my aunts, went to the morgue to identify the body and fill out paperwork. On her way she stopped by my grandmother’s to break the news. When she came in my grandmother said “oh it’s a sad day. He died just past midnight, I imagine.” My grandmother had begun to show some signs of dementia or just basic old age and so the weird comments weren’t too out of character. And, my aunt assumed that the hospital one of her siblings had already called to tell their mother the news.

My aunt shook it off and drove to the morgue. When she saw the death certificate she read the time of death listed as 12:10 A.M. On her way home she stopped back at my grandmother’s and asked her who had called her to tell her the news and asked why she said that she thought he’d died “just past midnight.” My grandmother said “he came to see me at 12:30 and we talked for a spell. He wanted to apologize for all he’d done to me and you kids. I think he made his peace and was able to move on, so I’m glad for that.” My grandmother than resumed humming and doing a jigsaw puzzle. – Anonymous

Daeva

There I was, bored in the combat zone (Iraq) drawing a picture, it was of the scenery, a few hills some dead grass, a tree stump. On the stump I decided to draw a creature, humanoid, like a pigmy werewolf, four foot something, claws and teeth. The commander shows up, calls us in for a mission, and I put away my drawing.

Weeks later, we are in an abandoned base, staying in some new buildings, no windows, doors, or anything. Every night, we have to set up watch, it takes the whole platoon to cover the building. I was one such reinforcement, sitting in an empty room, in the dark. After a while I noticed that I’m not alone, I look up and the thing I drew is sitting on the ceiling staring at me. I stared back, gripping my M-249 waiting for something to happen. When my team leader comes in, asking if I’m okay, as I tell him yes. He walks over to the one of the holes where the window would be, looks out, turns back and asked “did you see that?”

Later, near the Iran border, we stayed at another abandoned base, a bunch of classrooms spread between six buildings, all are one floor, with walls that don’t reach the ceilings, I had just gotten off a guard shift, came back into my room, and my buddy is in there, starring at the ceiling, I looked up, and there it was. Again. “What is that?” My buddy asked, just then our squad leader comes in asking what we’re doing, we explained, but it was gone again. Never saw it in country again.

Fast forward several years, I got injured in Iraq from faulty equipment, got a medical discharge, and got on with my life. One day I’m in a book store, and I find this book on demons, I flip through it, and there it is. The same thing I drew, the same thing I saw, twice. At two different locations. Preceding a personal injury that plagues me to this day.

The Patient

Again a second hand story, about my Brother in law’s Uncle, who was a Doctor in a small town in South India. Let’s call him Dr. I.

One night after closing his clinic, he was asleep at home. There was a knock on the door of his home. Dr. I’s grandmother opened the door (in India there are two layered doors – an internal one and an external one, here the internal one was opened with the a see through external one locked for any additional protection).

So in front of his grandmother was a person, in the dark of the night, asking (in the local tongue – Tamil) for the Doctor to help his wife who was pregnant and was in urgent need of medical care. The grandmother didn’t want to disturb Dr. I, so basically said that he is resting and to please come back in the morning. However, he was very insistent and persisted on the assistance of the Doctor, sighting that it was very urgent and she was critical.

In hearing all the commotion at the front door, Dr. I woke up and on hearing the situation from the Stranger agreed to help him. He packed any medical equipment he thought would be appropriate and left with the stranger to assist him.

On the way to his home, where his wife required assistance, all the routes were pitch black and without much lighting, so Dr. I still hadn’t seen the stranger clearly. He could only make out that he was wearing some clothes. The stranger kept on telling him how sorry he was to disturb him so late on at night, and that his wife was truly in need of medical attention.

Along the way, the stranger turned towards a graveyard, which made the Doctor halt and ask. The stranger responded that his home was behind the graveyard and thus intersecting it would be the shortest route towards it. Dr. I agreed to follow him, albeit still not completely convinced thought that it at least made some sense and that he hadn’t found a reason to doubt him.

Walking through the graveyard they walked close to a lamppost and thus some better lighting. At this point the Doctor couldn’t believe it but despite trying to locate thus stranger’s face, he couldn’t see any. All he could see was clothes hanging in the air. At this point he obviously tried to hide his shock, but he tried to think of an excuse to get out of there. So he told the figure that he had forgotten some of the key equipment and needed to go back home to get it.

The stranger responded that his home was behind the graveyard (Wicked Horror).

However, the stranger insisted that it isn’t required and to just let it be. The Doctor somehow tried to get out of it. He that the equipment is very important.  Dr. I offered to leave his current case behind if he didn’t believe him. Leaving the bag behind, he ran to his home.

Once home, he told what had happened to his grandmother.  Both of whom stayed vigilant throughout the night. In the morning, still shocked by the events of the last night, the Doctor went in to work as usual and tried to forget about what had happened.

During the day, the local Mayor had come to his clinic to get his son checked up. While small talk took precedent, the Doctor mentioned how the local government could do more to install more street lights. He sighted yesterday’s instance as an example, without getting in to details.

The Mayor was intrigued so he asked the Doctor to explain further. As things like this can be perceived as a sign of madness in Indian culture. The Mayor seemed interested, but yet unsurprised. He requested the Doctor to drop by his office.

The Doctor closed the clinic earlier than usual and went to his office. The Mayor removed three files of Doctors, from his desk.  Mayor explained that three Doctors had been missing with circumstances. Where they had been lured to a medical emergency, late at night, and then not been seen again.

This obviously shocked the Doctor even more, and he started being much more vigilant. — Zeeshan_haroon
