Tomorrow, Tuesday 27th of October, it's National Black Cat Day here in the UK!
Has anyone noticed? Did you see the #blackcatday on Twitter? I bring this up because recently two adorable kittens have become part of my family, and one of them is a beautiful black baby called Spock!
According to Cats Protection UK, Black Cats take 13% longer to be adopted than any other colour, resulting in an astonishing amount of cats left in shelters much longer than they should be, black cats ignored, and black kittens the last to find a new home!
I personally chose to have a black cat, requesting one in fact, because I knew this.
As Sparkle Witch, and as a Pagan, I am proud to say I LOVE BLACK CATS!!!
But why do people dislike them?
Several reasons...
- Sometimes superstition, a black cat crossing your path in some cultures is bad luck, and in others it's good.
- Black is more boring to look at, and doesn't 'photograph' well (which I think is an appalling reason, and so not true!).
- From a distance, two black cats can be indistinguishable.
- In the dark, they are harder to see, and therefore if they go missing perhaps harder to find. Additionally at night it might be more dangerous for them living by a road.
- And some people hate the association with witches!
What can we do?
If you're looking to adopt, consider a black cat. I know many of the people reading this will be witches, pagans, or related to that way of life, and so probably like black cats anyway!
