Hanged Man – Drop the Rope

This final throwback post marks the natural progression of our journey. It’s the last blast for this month. Growth and new beginnings are often paired with letting go. Tarot has an answer for these situations if you’re willing to seek them out.
Meet The Hanged Man—a card of being “in limbo,” waiting and surrendering.

A Blast From The Past

What about the sight of the Hanged Man hanging in suspension brings an air of concern or unease to a reading? Add in its title, and many worry they’re ready to be tarred and feathered (or hung from a Rope by their foot!). No worries, this card is more back than bite.

You may have questions about how this guy found himself in such a knot. Is he in danger? How did he get there? Look closer, and you’ll see there’s no struggle. The feeling is one of calm acceptance. His face is peaceful; there’s no suffering.

Why is He Upside Down?

The reversed position speaks to the need to see things differently. He’s hanging in suspension. This implies that surrendering to a situation or where you are in life is not only an option but the fastest route to victory. The tree he’s suspended from is very much alive with leaves and vines. Interpretation: if you leave things in the hands of the universe and let go of the struggle to manage and compete, the result will likely bear fruit.

The Hanged Man is at a waiting station in between when something has ended, but the next thing has yet to start. This is not a position of rest but more of a meditation and introspection of going inward to find solutions, clarity, and insight.

The Hanged Man Has Three Things to Say

Relax, Be Still, and Let Go. The card indicates that it may be time to ease up on the “doing” in your life and relax and let yourself “be” for a while. He often shows up when you feel stuck or restricted in some way. This is where we gain perspective.

These qualities bring to mind a client named “Robin .”Robin was recently in a whirlwind relationship that ended as suddenly as it began, after a few months of dating seriously, living together, and planning for the future. Heartbroken and confused about what had happened, she scheduled a reading with me. The appearance of the Hanged Man was a confirmation that there was nothing to be done but to let it go. Surrendering to the situation, turning inward, and allowing herself to “be” in the world was the best path forward. In time, she will find a new perspective – and a new beginning. As we said goodbye, Robin shared she finally felt at peace.

Here are a few questions to consider:

  • What in your life needs to (literally) be turned on its head right now?
  • What’s the rush?
  • What are you willing to lose/give up to move forward?
  • Where do you need to pause to consider other options?

Until next month, ever upward!
