3 Spectacular Shrine to Vedanarayana Perumal in Anoor, Chengalpattu

The Vedanarayana Perumal Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Lord Vishnu, incarnated as god of preserver. One of the three temples in Anoor. The other temples are Asthra Pureeswarar temple and Kandhaswamy temple. Vedanarayana Perumal Temple resides at Anoor, near banks of Palar.

Connectivity

Anoor is near the banks of Palar. Around 13 Kilometers from Chengalpattu. After passing the Chengalpattu court. After a journey around outskirts, we reach Pon Vilaintha Kalathur, 9 kilometers from Chengalpattu. Futher down 5 kilometers, we reach anoor along vallipuram road. The Vedanarayana Perumal temple is at the heart of the village.

The Vedanarayana Perumal Temple Scenario

The temple is in dilapidated condition. There are creepers and roots found in temple gopuram. Only heartwarming stuff is that the temple is visitable. There are regular pumas happening. The timing is 7 to 8 am. Pooja as per Vaikhanasa Code. The Vadanarayana Perumal temple is a hot spot worship center of cholas, since 10th century.

The Entrance has a small gopuram. The Sanctum face east in worn-out condition. The Vishnu as Vedanarayana Perumal lies in ardha-padmasna pose. He lies as left leg on pedestal, right leg on couch with sanghu, and chakram on his arms. Lower right hand in abhaya pose and left hand in chin mudra.

The Sri Vatsa mark is found on chest of the perumal. Pedestal by Sri Devi and Bhu Devi on his sides.

The mandaba belongs to chola times in Perumal temple anoor. Many statues and sculptures are on the pillars.

Worst no maintenance for the temple.

Some images of the Lord Ram and Sita is on a separate Shrine. There is a myth here that the palar has vanished a temple near by. There used to be a Ram temple along banks of river. The Temple has crumbled completely. Locals have managed to take some deity to the Vednarayana Perumal Temple. only a few images is left in the shrine. Many epigraphs and inscriptions are inside the temple.

The earliest inscriptions dates back to Raja Raja Chola 1 who manged the services and administrative work of the village.

The ceiling along with garbagraha has roots through the temple. The Temple has no electricity and gets drench during raining.

Inscriptions Found in Temple

The Wall Etching found in the temple offers a fraction of the glory.

R.Krishnaswami Iyengar in 1933, found Raja Raja Chola 1 Kandalur’s victory inscribed here in anoor.

Another Inscription of Raja Raja Chola appointing a Scholar to teach Vedas, Mimamsa, Vritthi, Alankara, Vyakharana and Adhyaayi.

Thirumukkudal, Sri Venkateswara Temple is well known temple. It conjoining the river palar, cheyyar, and vegavathi is scripted here.

A Temple function in 11th century during Vira Rajendran is also seen here. The Grandson of Raja Raja Chola.

An inscription of Ko Parthibhendradivarma, a Pallava Chieftain. He is on the assasination of Aditya KariKala. The Elder brother of Raja Raja Chola 1.

Single 14th century names the village as Adiyur, Satyasrayakulakala Chaturvedimangalam, and Chitramezhi Vinnagram.

In 1933, Temple had a revamp under R.Krishnaswami Iyengar. Though the work was honorably complete. They misplaced a few inscriptions. They also swap few inscriptions.

The Place is also “Dakshina Prayag” proximity to Mukkuddal.
