Amazing and Stunning ruins of Love Saluvankuppam Murugan Temple

Saluvankuppam Murugan Temple is not known. But, soon will be. It is near Mamallapuram. Mamallapuram is well known. Obviously for the Shore temples. Because, of Rock cut temples. Yet, during the Pallava Dynasty. The Murugan Temple at Saluvankuppam has a vasthistory. The Saluvankuppam Murugan Temple was found after Tsunami. Still, The 2004 Tsunami is the reason of Discovery. Furthermore, It dates back to 8th Century CE.

Saluvankuppam Murugan Temple Mahabalipuram

Moreover, no direct ways are there. It is better to reach Salavankuppam, first. The Saluvankuppam Temple is in bad condition.

Other travel options are by bus. From CMBT to Mahabalipuram, Intially. And then, Leaving in Salavankuppam Bus stop. And then a small 1.2 Km walk to location.

The Temple is only 2Km from Bus stand. Numerous travel options are available from Mamallapuram.

History and Discovery of Saluvankuppam Murugan Temple

The Temple was found after 2004 Tsunami. The Team found a rock inscription. Obviously, this Inscription exposed by Tsunami. Furthermore, the team found a remains. But, on more, found it strange. Moreover, It has 2 layers of shrine. First, the Grainite temple. Yet, build by Pallavas in 3rd Century.

Secondly, The brick shrine under them. This is weird to the team. No brick shrine during Pallavas. But, by 8th century CE. This makes it odd. Evidently, the oldest temple in India.

All these was done by ASI of India. The ASI is Archaelogical Survey of India. They beleive the temple is the oldest. Although a Hindu Deity shrine, now as remains. Futher, more , the shrine is on the Brick foundation. They go back to Sangam period.

The temple is north facing. This in unique for Saluvankuppam. Although most temples face east. There are two artifacts. One is from Pallavas. And the other from Sangam Period. Furthermore , this is one of two pre temples. One is The Saluvankuppam Murugan Temple. And Then, the Veetrirundha Perumal Temple at Veppathur.
Here comes the sad story. On 2nd may, 2018 there was a disaster. Unknown persons raided the temple. Obviously, Damaging the Vel. They uprooted the Vel. That broke into pieces.
After the 2004 tsunami had subsideing, they found inscriptions. Furthermore, the rock inscriptions showed the temple. They have been exposed by the tsunami waves.

Moreover, close to the area of Saluvankuppam. First, The inscriptions by Rashtrakuta king Krishna III. Second, from the Chola kings Parantaka I. And Then, Kulothunga Chola I shows Murugan Temple. Further, at Thiruvizhchil (the present day Saluvanakuppam).

Further info shows there was already a temple. But was constructed on 8th-century temple. Yet, on the older brick temple ruins. Moreover, Thirumoorthy, noted the sanctum was filled with sand. The garbhagriha or sanctum covered with granite slabs. Furthermore, upon the newer temple was built.

Opinions about Saluvankuppam Murugan Temple

S. Rajavelu, identified the mound as the site. In 2005, archaeologists found an 8th-century Pallava temple under the mound. G. Thirumoorthy, believed that the shrine will be old. Furthermore, the oldest Murugan temple in Tamil Nadu. There were many speculations on temple. Moreover, the temple could be one of the “Seven Pagodas”.

Sathyamurthy, the Superintendent of ASI Chennai Circle. Implying that the brick temple has a long history. Furthermore, could go to Sangam period. Because, as the shrine faced north. Evidently, unlike modern temples facing east or west. Although, proves the temple was constructed again and again. And the temple go back to 6th or 7th century CE. Since, the shilpa shastras, the canonical texts of temple architecture, were written. Moreover, age ranges from 1700 to 2200 years.

Destruction of Saluvankuppam Murugan Temple

Archaeologists say the brick shrine ruined above 2200 years. Although, either by a cyclone or a tsunami. The Pallavas built a granite temple here. Moreover, on the brick base in the 8th century CE. But, likely destroyed by a tsunami. Moreover, a second tsunami in the 13th century CE. Because of the inscriptions dated to 1215.

Absolute Story in Saluvankuppam Murugan Temple

Although, the Mahabalipuram, a sea port in 7th century. Furthermore, the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I is inspiration. But, before the 7th century CE, there was a port. Furthermore, there is was a small port. And at the site even earlier. Megalithic burial urns prove the facts of the area.

They go back to Christian era time. Because of urns, discovered near Mahabalipuram. The poem Perumpāṇāṟṟuppaṭai describes a port called Nirppeyyaru. Although, which some scholars identify as Mahabalipuram. Sadras in Mahabalipuram has been a port. And as the site of the port of Sopatma. Moreover, mentioning in Periplus of the Erythraean Sea.


Inscriptions of Mahabalipuram Saluvankuppam Murugan Temple


There are many rock inscriptions near the temple. The three granite pillars with inscriptions shows the temple. This led to the discovery of the temple itself. Although, one pillar contains the donation. Still of ten small balls of gold. Moreover by some one in Kirarpiriyan of Mahabalipuram in 858. And another records the donation of 16 of gold in 813. Because for the lamp by a Brahmin woman Vasanthanar.

The third pillar by Raja Raja Chola I. Moreover, there are five pillars. Along with inscriptions by the Pallava kings. They are Dantivarman I, Nandivarman III and Kambavarman, the Rashtrakuta king Krishna III and the Chola king Rajendra Chola III.
