Ramayan Chapter 5 – राम का वनवास: जय श्री राम भक्तों रामायण के इस पांचवे अध्याय में हम श्री राम के वनवास की कथा पढ़ेंगे। आशा करता हूँ आपने अभी तक के सभी अध्याय पढ़े होंगे, अगर नहीं तो निचे सभी अध्यायों की लिस्ट दी गयी है, इस अध्याय से पहले उनको जरूर पढ़ें।

राम को वनवास का आदेश

राजा दशरथ और कैकेयी के मध्य हुई बातों के विषय में किसी को पता नहीं चला। अयोध्या नगरी ने रातभर प्रसन्नतापूर्वक जागरण किया। गुरु वशिष्ठ भी सुबह होने की प्रतीक्षा में रातभर जागते रहे। सभी लोग बड़ी आशा व प्रसन्नता के साथ अगले दिन की सुबह की प्रतीक्षा कर रहे थे। अन्ततः सवेरा होने पर वह शुभ बड़ी आ ही गई, जिसकी सभी को बेसब्री से प्रतीक्षा थी। राम का राजतिलक सभी के लिए हर्ष का विषय था ।

प्रातः राजा दशरथ को महल में न पाकर गुरु वशिष्ठ ने मंत्री सुमंत्र को कैकेयी के महल में महाराज दशरथ को बुलाने भेजा। मंत्री सुमंत्र कैकेयी के महल में पहुंचे। दशरथ की हालत को देखकर वे समझ गए कि कैकेयी व राजा दशरथ में कुछ-न-कुछ विवाद अवश्य हुआ है। अतः मंत्री ने राजा की हालत के विषय में पूछा। कैकेयी ने कहा- “इस विषय में मुझे कुछ भी पता नहीं है। राजा इस विषय में राम को स्वयं बताएंगे।” राजा ने मंत्री सुमंत्र से राम को बुलाने का संकेत किया। मंत्री राम को बुलाकर ले आए। उनके साथ लक्ष्मण भी आ गए।

राम को देखते ही दशरथ का हृदय भर आया, आँखों से अश्रु बह निकले तथा वे सुध-बुध खो बैठे। राम ने कैकेयी से पिता की इस बुरी दशा का कारण पूछा, तब कैकेयी ने राम को दोनों वरदानों के बारे में बताया। कैकेयी की इस बात को सुनकर राम सब कुछ समझ गए। उन्होंने कहा- “मैं अपने पिताजी के वचनों का पालन अवश्य करूँगा। आप भरत को बुलाइए और राजतिलक कराइए। मैं इसी समय वनवास लेता हूँ।” इतना कहकर राम वापस चले गए। महाराज चुपचाप सब कुछ देख व सुन रहे थे। कैकेयी की ओर देखकर उन्होंने केवल इतना ही कहा- “धिक्कार है”।

वन जाने की तैयारी

राम ने अपनी माता कौशल्या को सारी बातें बताईं। कैकेयी के वरदानो के विषय में सुनकर कौशल्या आश्चर्य चकित रह गई। राम से अलग हो जाना उनके लिए असहनीय था अतः उनके आँसू बहने लगे। उन्होंने रुधे कंठ से कहा- “मैंने आज तक कैकेयी की सेवा की है। राजा ने हमेशा उसे ही महत्त्व दिया है। सोचा था कि पुत्र के राजा बन जाने पर मेरा भाग्य भी बदल जाएगा परन्तु मेरे भाग्य में सुख कहाँ ?”

माता कौशल्या का दुख देखकर लक्ष्मण को गुस्सा आ गया किन्तु राम के समझाने पर वह शांत हो गए। पुत्र-वियोग की कल्पना से ही माता कौशल्या अत्यन्त व्याकुल हो गई। उन्होंने राम से कहा- “पुत्र । इस समय तुम्हारे पिता होश में नहीं हैं। वे कैकेयी की बातों में आ गए हैं। मैं तुम्हारी माँ हूँ। मैं तुम्हे आदेश देती हूँ कि तुम वन मे न जाओ।” राम ने माता को समझाया कि पिता की आज्ञा मानना मेरा धर्म है। उन्होंने लक्ष्मण को भी समझाते हुए कहा कि ये सब भाग्य की बातें हैं। लक्ष्मण ने गुस्से से कहा- “मैं भाग्य की बात नहीं मानता, आप राजसिहासन पर बैठे। यदि किसी ने आपका विरोध किया तो मैं अयोध्या में आग लगा दूंगा। मैं कायर नहीं हूं जो भाग्य के भरोसे रहूँ।”

राम माता कौशल्या और भाई लक्ष्मण को समझाते रहे। अन्त में राम के हठ के समक्ष हार मानकर कौशल्या कहने लगी — “पुत्र ! वन में तुम्हारा धर्म ही तुम्हारी रक्षा करेगा। मेरे सभी पुण्यों के फल भी तुम्हें मिलेंगे।” दुख में डूबी माता कौशल्या से विदा लेकर राम सीता के पास पहुंचे। राम ने सीता को अपने वनवास जाने और भरत के राजा बनने के विषय में बताया। इसके बाद राम ने सीता से कहा कि मेरे जाने के बाद तीनों माताओं की सेवा करना। भरत के विरुद्ध कोई भावना मन में न लाना। यह कहकर उन्होंने सीता से विदा माँगी तो सीता पत्थर की प्रतिमा के समान खड़ी रह गई। वह एकदम से कुछ नहीं बोल सकी। उन्हें राम के वचनों पर विश्वास नहीं हो रहा था किन्तु संपूर्ण स्थिति को समझने के बाद भरे कंठ से कहने लगी- “मैं आपके बिना महल में नहीं रहूँगी। पत्नी, पति के सुख और दुख में उसके साथ रहती है।”

राम सीता को अयोध्या के महल में रहने के लिए मनाते रहे, परंतु सीता के हठ के आगे वे विवश हो गए। राम ने सीता को साथ चलने की अनुमति दे दी। तभी लक्ष्मण भी वहाँ आ गए और उन्होंने भी साथ चलने का आग्रह किया । अन्ततः राम लक्ष्मण को भी साथ ले जाने के लिए सहमत हो गए। तब राम ने लक्ष्मण को माता से अनुमति लेने तथा गुरु वशिष्ठ के यहाँ से अपने दिव्य अस्त्र-शस्त्र लाने के लिए कहा। लक्ष्मण ने राम की आज्ञा का पालन किया।

राम सीता और लक्ष्मण के साथ पिता दशरथ के पास अनुमति लेने गए। इससे पहले राजा दशरथ ने कौशल्या और सुमित्रा को अपने पास बुलवा लिया था। राम के पहुँचने पर दशरथ ने उठने का प्रयास किया, परंतु वे उठ न सके और फिर से मूच्छित हो गए। कुछ समय के बाद होश में आने पर राम ने उनसे सीता और लक्ष्मण के साथ वन जाने की अनुमति माँगी साथ ही पिता को धैर्य बंधाया।

दशरथ कहने लगे “कैकेयी ने मेरी बुद्धि भ्रष्ट कर दी है। तुम मुझे कारावास में डाल दो और राज्य का कार्यभार संभाल लो।” राम ने उन्हें ढांढ़स दिलाते हुए कहा कि वे लोभवश राजा नहीं बनना चाहते हैं। आप मुझे वनवास की अनुमति देकर रघुकुल की मर्यादा को बनाए रखें। उसी समय कैकेयी आई और उसने राम को गेरुएँ रंग के वस्त्र देते हुए वन जाने का आदेश दिया। कैकेयी ने सीता को भी तपस्विनियों के वस्त्र दिए।

राम, लक्ष्मण और सीता ने राजसी वस्त्र के स्थान पर गेरुएँ वस्त्र धारण कर लिए। यह दृश्य देखकर सबकी आँखे भर आईं। सभी कठोर हृदय वाली कैकेयी को बुरा भला कहने लगे। अपराधबोध की पीड़ा से दशरथ सिर झुकाकर बैठे रहे। उनकी आँखों से लगातार आँसू बह रहे थे। सीता को भी वन जाते देखकर महर्षि ने क्रोध में आकर कहा, “अगर सीता वन में जाएगी, तो मैं और सब नगरवासी भी साथ जाएंगे और अयोध्या में कोई नहीं रहेगा।” सुमित्रा ने लक्ष्मण को शिक्षा दी कि राम और सीता को माता-पिता मानकर उनकी सेवा करना। उनकी हर प्रकार से रक्षा करना। अपने प्राणों की चिंता न करके राम और सीता की सेवा करना।

वन गमन

राजा दशरथ और तीनों माताओं से विदा लेकर राम, लक्ष्मण और सीता राजमहल से बाहर आए। पूरा नगर शोक में डूबा एवं दुख से व्याकुल था। नगरवासी महल के बाहर एकत्रित हो गए। अयोध्या नगरी से बाहर आकर राम, सीता व लक्ष्मण ने मंत्री सुमंत्र को रथ के साथ खड़ा देखा। तीनों के रथ पर चढ़ते ही रथ तेज गति से चल पड़ा।

राजा दशरथ, कौशल्या, सुमित्रा और नगरवासी रथ के पीछे दौड़ रहे थे। पूरी नगरी में ‘राम ! राम । हमारे राम ! हे लक्ष्मण ! हे सीता !’ के स्वर गूंज रहे थे। रथ के आँखों से ओझल होते ही राजा दशरथ वहीं गिर गए। रानियाँ किसी प्रकार उन्हें राजमहल में ले आईं। पुत्र-वियोग में राजा ‘राम ! पुत्र राम !’ पुकार रहे थे। अयोध्या नगरी शोक सागर में डूबी हुई थी। अनेक नगरवासी रथ के पीछे-पीछे भाग रहे थे। वे राम द्वारा समझाने पर भी वापस नहीं लौटना चाहते थे। विवश होकर राम और लक्ष्मण भी रथ से उतरकर नगरवासियों के साथ चलने लगे।

शाम को तमसा नदी के किनारे पहुंचने पर रात को वहीं ठहरने का निर्णय लिया गया। राम और सीता माता-पिता की याद में अत्यन्त दुखी थे। लक्ष्मण और सुमंत्र उनसे कुछ दूर उनकी रक्षा हेतु बैठ गये। एक लम्बी दूरी तक पैदल चलकर आने के कारण थककर नगरवासी गहरी नींद में सो गए। अभी दिन नहीं निकला था कि राम उठ गए। उन्होंने सुमंत्र को चुपचाप रथ चलाने के लिए कहा। नगरवासियों को कष्ट न देने की इच्छा से राम ने चुपचाप वहाँ से जाने का निश्चय किया। सवेरे आँख खुलने पर लोग निराशा से भर गए। उन्हें राम, लक्ष्मण और सीता कहीं नहीं मिले। अन्त में वे उदास मन से अयोध्या वापस लौट गए।

निषादराज गुह और ऋषि भारद्वाज से भेंट

रथ तेज गति से दक्षिण दिशा की ओर आगे बढ़ रहा था। गोमती और सई नदी को पार करने के बाद वे रुक गए क्योंकि राजा दशरथ के कोसल राज्य की सीमा यहाँ समाप्त होती थी। जन्मभूमि को छोड़ते हुए राम का हृदय भर आया। उनकी आंखों के समक्ष जीवन की अनेक घटनाएँ घूम गई। उन्होंने सुमंत्र के सामने अपने हृदय की पीड़ा प्रकट करते हुए कहा कि अब न जाने कब अयोध्या लौटना होगा? सरयू नदी के किनारे पर न जाने कब धूमूँगा? न जाने माता-पिता से कब भेंट होगी? शोक में डूबे राम ने अयोध्या की ओर मुख किया और हाथ जोड़- कर प्रणाम किया।

राम, सीता और लक्ष्मण को देखकर वहाँ आस-पास के निवासियों को भीड़ लग गई। राम के वनवास का समाचार सुनकर वे पहले तो दुखी हो गए। शीघ्र ही उनका दुख क्रोध में बदल गया। वे राम के वन- वास के लिए राजा दशरथ को भला-बुरा कहने लगे। उन्होंने कहा कि हम ऐसे राजा के राज्य में नहीं रहेंगे। हम भी आपके साथ चलेंगे। राम ने उन्हें समझाकर उनके क्रोध को शांत किया। इसके बाद रथ आगे बढ़ा। शाम होने पर वे गंगा के किनारे बसे गांव शृंगवेरपुर पहुंचे।

वहाँ निषादराज गुह का शासन था। राम के आगमन का समाचार जानकर निषादराज अनेक लोगों के साथ उनका स्वागत करने पहुंचा। राम के वनवास के विषय में जानकर उसने राम से वहीं ठहरने की प्रार्थना की। निषादराज ने वहाँ का राज्य संभालने की प्रार्थना राम से की। गुह के प्रेमपूर्ण व्यवहार को देखकर राम ने उसे गले से लगा लिया। राम रात्रि में वहीं तृण शैय्या पर सोए।

सवेरा होने पर राम ने सुमंत्र को लौट जाने का आग्रह करते हुए कहा कि हमारी ओर से सभी माताओं और पिताजी को प्रणाम कहिएगा। भरत को समझाना कि वह तीनों माताओं का समान रूप से ध्यान रखें। सुमंत्र से कहा कि वह भी सबका ध्यान रखे। राम की आज्ञा पाकर सुमंत्र अयोध्या के लिए चल पड़े। राम गुह से विदा लेकर आगे बढ़े तथा नाव द्वारा गंगा पार की और वत्सदेश में प्रवेश किया।

लक्ष्मण सबसे आगे चल रहे थे, बीच में सीता थी और राम पीछे चल रहे थे। शाम होने पर वे ठहर गए। राम ने लक्ष्मण को समझाया “मैं माताओं के विषय में बहुत । चितित हूँ। तुम वापस जाकर माता कौशल्या और माता सुमित्रा की सेवा करो में तो उन्हें कोई सुख न दे सका।” लक्ष्मण ने राम को धैर्य बंधाने का प्रयास किया और माताओं के विषय में चिंता न करने के लिए कहा।

रात वहीं बिताने के बाद वे प्रातः फिर से चल पड़े। गंगा और यमुना के संगम पर प्रयाग में ऋषि भारद्वाज का आश्रम स्थित था। उन तीनों के वहाँ पहुँचने पर ऋषि भारद्वाज प्रसन्न हो उठे तथा उन तीनों का आदर-सत्कार किया। रात को उन्होंने ऋषि भारद्वाज के आश्रम में ही विश्राम किया। सवेरे यमुना नदी पार करके वे चित्रकूट पहुंचे। वहाँ का सुखदायक वातावरण देखकर राम ने कुछ दिन वहीं रहने का निश्चय किया।

राजा दशरथ की अंतिम साँस

राजा दशरथ को अपनी मृत्यु का पहले से ही आभास हो गया था। उन्होंने अपनी पत्नी कौशल्या से कहा- “मेरी मृत्यु का समय आ चुका है। इस अंतिम घड़ी में मैं अपने पुत्रों को देख भी नहीं पाऊँगा। मैं अपने कर्मों का फल भोग रहा हूँ।” ऐसा कहकर राजा दशरथ के मुख से अन्तिम शब्द ‘राम-राम’ निकले और उन्होंने

इस संसार से विदा ली। यह सब देखकर शोकाकुल रानियाँ विलाप करने लगीं। अयोध्यानगरी पर दुर्भाग्य का साया पड़ गया था। मंत्रियों में आपसी विचार-विमर्श होने लगा। राजा दशरथ के मृत शरीर को तेल के कड़ाहे में रखकर सुरक्षित रखा गया।

Ramayan Chapter 5 in English – Rama’s order of exile

No one came to know about the things that happened between King Dasaratha and Kaikeyi. The city of Ayodhya kept awake happily throughout the night. Guru Vashishtha also kept awake the whole night waiting for the morning. Everyone was waiting for the morning of the next day with great hope and happiness. At last, in the morning, that auspicious lady arrived, which everyone was eagerly waiting for. Ram’s coronation was a matter of joy for all.

Guru Vashishtha, not finding King Dasharatha in the palace in the morning, sent minister Sumantra to call King Dasharatha to Kaikeyi’s palace. Minister Sumantra reached Kaikeyi’s palace. Seeing Dasharatha’s condition, they understood that there must have been some dispute between Kaikeyi and King Dasharatha. So the minister asked about the condition of the king. Kaikeyi said- “I do not know anything about this. The king himself will tell Ram about this.” The king indicated to minister Sumantra to call Ram.

The minister called Ram and brought him. Laxman also came with them. On seeing Ram, Dasaratha’s heart was filled, tears flowed from his eyes and he lost his mind. Rama asked Kaikeyi the reason for her father’s bad condition, then Kaikeyi told Rama about both the boons. After listening to this talk of Kaikeyi, Ram understood everything. He said- “I will definitely follow my father’s words. You call Bharat and get him crowned. I take exile at this time.” Having said this, Ram went back. Maharaj was silently watching and listening to everything. Looking at Kaikeyi, he only said – “Damn it”.

Preparing to go to the Forest

Ram told everything to his mother Kaushalya. Kausalya was surprised to hear about Kaikeyi’s boon. Being separated from Ram was unbearable for him, so his tears started flowing. He said to Rudhe Kanth – “I have served Kaikeyi till today. The king has always given importance to her. I thought that my fate would also change when my son became the king, but where is the happiness in my fate?”

Laxman got angry after seeing the sorrow of mother Kaushalya, but he calmed down after Ram explained. Mother Kaushalya became very distraught at the thought of separation from her son. He said to Ram – “Son. Your father is not conscious at this time. They have come to Kaikeyi’s words. I am your mother I order you not to go to the forest.” Ram explained to his mother that obeying his father was his religion. He also explained to Lakshman that these are all matters of fate. Lakshman said angrily- “I You don’t listen to luck, you sat on the throne. If anyone opposes you, I will set fire to Ayodhya. I am not a coward to rely on luck.”

Ram kept explaining to mother Kaushalya and brother Laxman. In the end, after accepting defeat in front of Ram’s stubbornness, Kaushalya started saying – “Son! Only your religion will protect you in the forest. You will also get the fruits of all my good deeds.” Ram reached Sita after saying goodbye to the grief-stricken mother Kaushalya. Ram told Sita about his going to exile and becoming the king of Bharata. After this, Ram told Sita that my Serve the three mothers after leaving. Do not harbor any feelings against Bharat. Having said this, when he bid farewell to Sita, Sita remained standing like a stone statue. She could not speak at once. Couldn’t believe it but after understanding the whole situation she started saying with full voice – “I will not stay in the palace without you. The wife stays with the husband in his joys and sorrows.

Ram kept on persuading Sita to stay in the palace of Ayodhya, but he was forced in front of Sita’s stubbornness. Rama allowed Sita to accompany him. That’s why Lakshman also came there and he also urged to go with him. Finally Rama agreed to take Lakshmana along with him. Then Rama asked Lakshmana to take permission from the mother and bring his divine weapons from Guru Vashishtha’s place. Lakshman obeyed Rama’s orders. Rama went to father Dasaratha with Sita and Lakshmana to seek permission. Earlier, King Dasaratha had called Kaushalya and Sumitra to him. On reaching Rama, Dasaratha tried to get up, but he could not get up and fainted again. On regaining consciousness after some time, Rama asked him for permission to go to the forest with Sita and Lakshmana, as well as tied his father’s patience. Dashrath started saying “Kaikei has corrupted my intelligence. You put me in prison and take charge of the kingdom.” Ram consoled him and said that he did not want to become king out of greed.

Forest Walk

Rama, Lakshmana and Sita came out of the palace after saying goodbye to King Dasaratha and the three mothers. The whole city was immersed in mourning and was distraught with sorrow. The townspeople gathered outside the palace. Coming out of the city of Ayodhya, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana saw minister Sumantra standing with the chariot. As soon as all three got on the chariot, the chariot started moving at a fast speed. King Dasaratha, Kaushalya, Sumitra and the townspeople were running behind the chariot. ‘Ram’ in the whole city! Ram . Our Ram! Hey Laxman! Hey Sita! The voices were resounding. King Dasaratha fell there as soon as the chariot disappeared from sight. The queens somehow brought him to the palace. King ‘Ram’ in separation from son! Son Ram! were calling The city of Ayodhya was immersed in the ocean of sorrow. Many townspeople were running behind the chariot. They did not want to return even after being persuaded by Ram. Being forced, Ram and Lakshman also got down from the chariot and started walking with the townspeople. On reaching the bank of Tamsa river in the evening, it was decided to stay there for the night. Ram and Sita were very sad at the memory of their parents. Laxman and Sumantra sat at a distance from him to protect him. Tired of walking a long distance, the townspeople fell fast asleep. It was not yet day that Ram got up. He asked Sumantra to drive the chariot quietly. Not wanting to trouble the townspeople, Rama decided to leave quietly. People were filled with despair when they opened their eyes in the morning. They could not find Rama, Lakshmana and Sita anywhere. At last he returned back to Ayodhya with a sad heart.

Meeting with Nishadraj Guh and Rishi Bharadwaj

The chariot was moving towards south direction at a fast speed. After crossing the Gomti and Sai rivers, they halted as the boundary of King Dasaratha’s Kosala kingdom ended here. Leaving the birthplace, Ram’s heart was filled with tears. Many incidents of life revolved before his eyes. Expressing the pain of his heart in front of Sumantra, he said that now don’t know when he will have to return to Ayodhya? Don’t know when will I smoke on the banks of Saryu river? Don’t know when will you meet your parents? Immersed in grief, Ram turned towards Ayodhya and bowed down with folded hands. Seeing Rama, Sita and Lakshmana, the residents of the surrounding areas got crowded. At first they were saddened to hear the news of Rama’s exile. Soon his sorrow turned to anger.
