Who Am I As A Child Of God

who am i as a child of God

Introduction

The question “who am I as a child of God?” is a fundamental question that many people ask themselves. As a Christian, it is important to understand your identity in Christ. In this article, we will delve into the Bible to explore what it means to be a child of God.

What does it mean to be a child of God?

In John 1:12, it says, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.” This verse tells us that we become children of God when we receive Jesus Christ and believe in Him.

Being a child of God means that we are part of God’s family. We have been adopted into His family and are now heirs to His kingdom. In Romans 8:16-17, it says, “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” As children of God, we have the right to receive all the blessings that God has for us.

Our identity as children of God is not based on what we do or how good we are. It is based solely on what Jesus Christ has done for us. In Ephesians 2:8-9, it says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” We cannot earn our salvation or our identity as children of God. It is a free gift from God.

Our relationship with God as His children

As children of God, we have a special relationship with Him. We can call Him “Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15). This is a term of endearment that expresses our close relationship with God. We can approach God with confidence and know that He loves us and wants the best for us.

As children of God, we have the privilege of being able to talk to God through prayer. In Matthew 6:9-13, Jesus taught His disciples how to pray. He said, “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” Prayer is a way for us to communicate with God and to seek His will for our lives.

As children of God, we also have the Holy Spirit living within us. In John 14:16-17, Jesus said, “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.” The Holy Spirit guides us, comforts us, and helps us to understand the things of God.

Our responsibility as children of God

As children of God, we have a responsibility to live our lives in a way that honors God. In 1 Peter 2:9-10, it says, “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.” We have been called to live a life that reflects the love and grace of God.

In Matthew 5:16, Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” We are called to be the light of the world and to let our good deeds shine before others so that they may see the love of God through us.

As children of God, we are also called to love one another. In John 13:34-35, Jesus said, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” We are called to love others just as Jesus loved us.

Our identity as children of God also means that we have been given a purpose in life. In Ephesians 2:10, it says, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” God has a plan and a purpose for each of our lives, and as His children, we are called to fulfill that purpose.

Challenges of being a child of God

Being a child of God does not mean that life will be easy. In fact, Jesus warned His disciples that they would face persecution and tribulation in this world. In John 16:33, He said, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

As children of God, we may face opposition from the world. In 1 John 3:1-2, it says, “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.” We may be mocked, ridiculed, or persecuted for our faith, but we can take comfort in the fact that we belong to God’s family.

Conclusion

In conclusion, being a child of God is a great privilege and responsibility. It means that we have been adopted into God’s family and have the right to receive all the blessings that He has for us. Our identity as children of God is based on our faith in Jesus Christ and what He has done for us, not on our own works or goodness. As children of God, we have a special relationship with Him and are called to live our lives in a way that honors Him. We may face challenges and opposition in this world, but we can take comfort in the fact that we belong to God’s family and have a purpose in life. Let us live our lives as children of God and reflect His love and grace to others.
