My Duty As A Church Member

My Duty As A Church Member

As a church member, it is important to understand our duty and responsibility to the church. The Bible gives us guidance on how we should behave as members of the body of Christ. In this discussion, we will explore what it means to have a duty as a church member and how we can fulfill that duty today.

Firstly, it is important to understand that the church is not a building, but rather a community of believers who have put their faith in Jesus Christ. In the book of Acts, we see that the early church was a close-knit community where believers shared their possessions, took care of one another, and worshipped together. Acts 2:42-47 says, “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”

From this passage, we can see that our duty as church members is to be devoted to the teaching of the apostles, fellowship with one another, and prayer. We should also be willing to share our possessions and help those in need. This means that we should be actively involved in the life of the church and seek to build relationships with other believers.

Secondly, our duty as church members is to use our spiritual gifts to serve the body of Christ. In 1 Corinthians 12, the apostle Paul writes, “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” (1 Corinthians 12:4-7).

This passage tells us that God has given each of us spiritual gifts that we are to use for the benefit of the church. We are all part of the body of Christ, and each part has a unique function. Just as the different parts of the body work together to function properly, so too must the members of the church work together to fulfill God’s purposes. We should seek to discover our spiritual gifts and use them to serve others in the church.

Thirdly, our duty as church members is to support the leadership of the church. In Hebrews 13:17, we are told, “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.”

This passage tells us that we should respect and support the leaders of the church because they are responsible for our spiritual well-being. We should submit to their authority and follow their guidance as long as it is in accordance with God’s Word. This does not mean that we should blindly follow our leaders, but rather that we should seek to understand their vision for the church and work together with them to achieve it.

Finally, our duty as church members is to be a witness to the world. In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus gives us the Great Commission, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

This passage tells us that we are called to go out into the world and share the good news of Jesus Christ. As church members, we should be actively involved in evangelism and reaching out to those who do not know Jesus. This can be done through personal evangelism, missions trips, or supporting the work of missionaries.

In addition to evangelism, we should also be a witness to the world through our lives. Our behavior and attitudes should reflect the love and grace of God, and we should seek to live in such a way that others are drawn to Jesus. This means living a life of integrity and being a positive influence on those around us.

In conclusion, our duty as church members is multifaceted. We are called to be devoted to the teaching of the apostles, fellowship with one another, and prayer. We are also called to use our spiritual gifts to serve the body of Christ, support the leadership of the church, and be a witness to the world. As we fulfill our duty as church members, we will be able to experience the fullness of what it means to be a part of the body of Christ and be used by God to further His kingdom.
