Russia (AP) — Amid a heat wave that is causing serious forest fires, a Siberian town with the largest temperature fluctuation in the world has set a new record high.
According to Pogoda I Klimat, a website that gathers Russian meteorological data, the temperature in Verkhoyansk reached 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 F) on Saturday.
About 4,660 kilometres (2,900 miles) northeast of Moscow, in the Sakha Republic, the village is situated above the Arctic Circle.
The village of roughly 1,300 people has the Guinness World Record for having the widest variety of temperatures, with a low of minus 68 degrees Celsius (minus 90 degrees Fahrenheit) and a previous high of 37.2 degrees Celsius (98.96 F.)
This year, Siberia experienced unseasonably high temperatures, which caused numerous large-scale wildfires. According to Avialesokhrana, the official organisation that keeps track of forest fires, more than 275,000 hectares (680,000 acres) of land are currently burning in the Sakha Republic.
