“Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others” ~ Philippians 2:4

Divorce is a big problem in the United States. In U.S. nearly 50 percent of marriages end in Divorce. The number sky rockets for remarriages. But this message, unlike many Christian message, is not going to be one that assaults the mind of those who have undergone divorce.

I empathize with those who have experienced divorce and have been affected by it. And that is who this message is for. It is for those who have firsthand experience with the devastation divorce cause.

When I was in college, as a child of divorced parents, I studied what it would take for the United States to see a decrease in the harmful effects that divorce caused such as repeating the cycle, high school drop outs, etc. I carried out this study by looking at the success stories. The people who made through the tough times they experienced from their parents and became objectiveless successful.

Almost all of these case studies had something in common. They had a Buffer.

They had a parent who would unrelentingly give love and attention to the child at the same time their life was falling apart, as if it wasn’t falling apart. As a pastor, I would never advocate for “faking it till you make it.” But I do advocate for loving like Jesus. Sacrificial love is the goal (Romans 12:1-2). As a parent, remember that your children are a heritage of the Lord and they will turn out how you raise them.

If at all possible, do not raise them to be victims, angry, and scared. Raise them as fearless and cheerfully joyful human beings (Proverbs 22:6). Buffer them from the depraved effects of the World (Ephesians 6:4).
