Carnal Christian

“If a Christian remains in a carnal condition long after experiencing new birth, he hinders God’s salvation from realizing its full potential and manifestation. Only when he is growing in grace, constantly governed by the spirit, can salvation be wrought in him” ~ Watchman Nee

I recently heard a story about young man who lived like a double side of a coin. He would do all kinds of wickedness throughout the week but around certain individuals, he would act as if what he did was not wrong. One day, a friend asked, “Hey man, why do you do what you do? Don’t you profess to be a Christian?”

The young man replied, “Yes I am a Christian. Just a Carnal one.”

This story, whether true or not, exemplifies a group of individuals who I have no doubt are saved by the Gospel of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:3). But their fault is a misconception of Grace. People may experience the grace of God but only feel it most intimately when they sin are feeling as if they need more of it.

It becomes an obsession, like a drug addiction. Mentally, grace registers as something that only is given when we act “bad.”

However, we have grace regardless of our shortcomings. We are insured by grace 24/7 because that is how comprehensive the work of Christ was 2,000 years ago. Sin is defeated and death is usurped, but it is not a license to sin (Romans 6:1-2). Therefore, grow beyond the name tag of “carnal Christian” and desire the name tag of “mature Christian” (1 Corinthians 14:20).

Build upon your Heavenly reward by Heavenly renewal!
