As children age, many times we neglect the fact that those around us also age. Perhaps the saddest realization on Earth is looking across the room to your mother and seeing that she has aged. She isn’t as young as she once was. She looks a little more tired than you remember.
But the worst part is that you didn’t even notice her change. She was young once and then in the blink of the eye, she isn’t. This realization makes you feel scared and vulnerable because you realize how little you control. But God has provided His Word of comfort for those who are in the midst of age.
Perhaps, the first thing to do is acknowledge that God is outside of time and that time consists because of Him. This is the God whom you put your trust.
“But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day” ~ 2 Peter 3:8
Next, address why the Fear of seeing your parents grow old makes you feel vulnerable. You feel looming existential threat of aging and for many, it is because you realize that one day, those who you love will pass away. When they pass, you fear loneliness and the horror of no longer making memories with them.
This fear is entirely rational and I do not want to provide you a philosophical pill to mask your fear. But I do want to encourage you that God resides through every step of life and that those in Christ will not see Death. Jesus has defeated death, thus conquering it forever. Death will become and allusion and a brief passing (1 Thessalonians 5:13-18).
This promise is so amazing that Scripture titles it as our “blessed hope!” (Titus 2:13).
Begin immersing yourself in hope and you will develop a hopeful endurance which will help you treasure those closest to you. God will sustain you in your greatest fears (2 Timothy 1:7).
