Around late September to early October, there is a certain uneasy that begins to stir inside some Christians, while a certain excitement that stirs when others. 

Many Christians hate Halloween and for some, it has become something of a naughty word for other Christians to acknowledge. Still yet, some Christians get excited and call it a “ministry opportunity” and organize Trunk-or-Treats at church, or for the sake of niceness, call it a Fall Fest or something of the like.

I am not here to debate whether Halloween is right or wrong. I have my own convictions, yes, but it doesn’t matter. I have another axe to grind.

It is difficult to argue from a historical perspective. Halloween derives from two different faith traditions. Pagan Celtic and Catholic. The Pagan Celtic tradition known as Samhain commemorated the harvest at the end of the farming season and masks were worn to keep evil spirits away. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory the III instituted All Saints Day as a day of veneration to those who have passed on to Heaven with the day before being known as All Hollows Eve (you are probably beginning to see contemporary semblance). 

With the rise of the Christian faith, the holidays began to share qualities with each other. 

With the Halloween looming there was only one point that I found necessary to reiterate.

 Evil spirits are not a holiday occurrence. They do not vacation in the halls of Earth or the spirits of men. They are a constant present and real force continually in the world. Masks will not save you from them, masks aid only them (Proverbs 26:24-28). The only thing capable of covering you from their influence is the blanket of Christ’s righteousness (Romans 4:6).

The Holy Spirit seeks to indwell within you and feel every crevice of your heart so that their is no room for another spirit (Romans 8:9). With Christ, you do not have to hide, you are armored and equipped to stand your ground and fight in Jesus name (Ephesians 6).

So no matter what you do this Halloween, do nothing outside the wisdom and discretion of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:15-17). Spirits lurk on October 31st and July 31st all the same.
