And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God ~ Genesis 21:33

In the Old Testament, and the New Testament for the fact of the matter, God is known by many names. Of course, God attributes to Himself the name of Yahweh.

But there are times when in our finite flesh that humanity is just so astounded by the beautiful nature and works of God that they describe Him in as accurate terms that can be mustered.

There is a story in Scripture, where God promises the patriarch Abraham that he will will have a son. When this promise was made, Abraham was 75 years old. At the age of 100 and after much anguish in waiting, this promise was finally fulfilled. Abraham’s heir, Isaac was born. Abraham was a hundred years old and Sarah was 90.

As you can imagine this was an amazing spectacle that occurred and it only occurred by God’s will, do not be mistaken.

Following this incredible miracle, we also see a treaty form between two men of power, Abimelech and Abraham, and Abraham being given the land where he was to dwell “many days,” likely indicating the rest of his life (Genesis 21:34). Abraham had much to rejoice over. He had a long awaited child and land, which is was very valuable, and the rest of his life ahead of him.

In an overflow of joy, Abraham called upon, “the name of the Lord, the everlasting God” (Genesis 21:33). The name for everlasting God is El Olam which indicated that God is unending. That means he has no beginning and no end. God is eternal.

An eternal God has an infinitely better understanding of what is better for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

In Abraham’s case, a righteous man who exemplifies his righteousness by faith, ascertained physical prosperity (Romans 4:3-5).

In our dispensation, and or age, we do not need physical prosperity. I mean it would be nice right?

But is it any better than the wealth of Heaven (Ephesians 1:3)? Of joy (Philippians 4:4)? Surely all the physical prosperity of the world can offer happiness, but the Word of God assures us that no amount of material wealth can offer joy (Matthew 6:19-21).

Joy comes from the Spiritual betterment provided by an everlasting God, who offers everlasting peace (2 Thessalonians 3:16). That is our God, El Olam. He is unending. Never beginning. Eternal. Powerful.

He is our God.
