Fall is a beautiful time of the year. The colors change. Holidays are ushed in. And seasonal drinks galore are advertised.
But it can also be a confusing time. Sometimes, summer sticks around a bit longer than expected the climate remains hot and humid much longer than expected. Then again, sometimes, the world around us transforms quickly and the leaves change colors, fall, and then the weather crispens before we even change out our wardrobe.
When autumn arrives, it is the first time we even consider a Jacket since the prior winter.
But we also prepare our hearts for the seasons which focus on thanksgiving, peace, and joy. The problem is, life moves quickly and all too often, we can’t seem to equip these wonderful attributes.
My advice, is to put on the jacket of Charity. Wear the jacket of love.
In Colossians 3:12-14, the Apostle Paul urges the Church to,
“Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.”
As believers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we are called to be kind, humble, meek, patient, forbearing, and forgiving. But above all these things, put on charity. God’s Word very literally tells us to put on charity. Like a jacket for the cold days ahead.
Before you leave each morning, put on charity. Don’t just put on love. It is inadequate for the cold days ahead. Put on charity.
Charity is a graceful representation of love that includes all of the above attributes that we are called to and for the days that the weather of life is too nippy, God’s charity is the only thing that insulates the heart adequately. Therefore, put on charity.
Enjoy the season. Edify those around you. And be charitable in all things, for this is the will of Christ Jesus!
