Designer Superhero

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” ~ Captain America

There is an assignment that I often assign to my chemistry classes that require them to design their own Superhero based off of the attributes of that element. For instance, if they make a Hero with an alkali metal, this superhero will be reactive, explosive, and easily provoked. If you were to choose a transition metal, you would be looking at a hero with hard skin and ability to withstand a lot of energy.

Often as I watch my students pour into their heroes, I sit and wonder, “If I were to make my own hero, what would he/she look like?” Or “What would their backstory be?”

I design a hero is who strong, capable, has incredible powers, and an amazing backstory that has the hero likely falling into a pit of chemicals or [enter dramatic story of transformation].

Even as a Christian, this has been my perception of a hero. Never do I think of a hero as a lowly, middle-eastern carpenter, without a penny to His name, who is crucified and crushed without even putting up a fight. But the truth is, Jesus Christ, whom I describe, is the greatest hero in all of history.

His backstory is that Jesus Christ humbled Himself, came from Heaven, and lived a sinless but hard life (Philippians 2:8). He was crucified and killed by the people He came to save, buried, but rose again, fully manifesting His power and enabling others to have the same power which rose Him (John 3:17, Romans 4:25, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

Jesus isn’t a designer hero. He is the Holy hero. Showcasing, love, power, and might He sits at the right hand of God (Colossians 3:1).

Our hero.
