Happy Leif Erikson Day!

October 9th commemorates a holiday that not many people outside of Nordic communities know or recognize. It is a day known as Leif Erikson Day. It is a fascinating holiday that gets overshadowed by Columbus Day which comes just a few days later (sometimes the same day) or as many are now recognizing it now, Indigenous People Day.

Despite this, Leif Erikson Day is a day which Nordic communities acknowledge as the day that Leif Erikson led the first European expedition to America, hundreds of years even before Columbus who often gets that title.

It is another holiday commemorating land, people, and ideas “found.” You have Leif Erikson Day and Columbus Day set aside for this purpose, but noone ever considers Christ who knew us before the world ever began. Or how Christ 2000 years ago, journeyed to a broken world to save it from a sinful demise.

“For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.” ~ Ephesians 5:8

We were once lost, but now we are found. Christ has found us. Jesus has saved us. And God is not interested in a holiday, because of this, He is interested in a holy life (Colossians 2:16-17). He made us capable of leading a holy life, through Christ who knew us before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4).

So no, we may not be wearing horned helmets or stylish furs, but we have a heart to have others found too. We are to be a people who discover truth and live unto that truth (2 Timothy 3:16).

We once we’re lost, but now we are found. Happy Leif Erikson Day!
