Walmart is often a dreaded experience, at least for me, a male. With my one track mind, I got in for some milk, eggs, and or something else mundane. My wife Hallie goes in with me with another mission on her mind. She wants to check out the makeup section…

Lipstick. Blush. Fingernail polish.

I’ve never understood. How much make up does one woman need! And polish? Don’t get me started.

We as people always are working so hard to cover up ugly things! We spend so much time on our feet. They get dirty, calloused, and all kinds of rank. But so often, instead of giving them a little TLC, a woman will distract what’s underneath with a shiny, colorful coat of toe nail polish!

Saying this, I am going to talk about myself before you assume I am just picking on women. I am the same way! I always try to hide a bad hair day or a cowlick with a ball-cap instead of giving my hair some extra care.

The human condition is one in the same. I once heard it said, “There is no use in turning over a new leaf. The other side is just as dirty.” In shame, we try to cover our filth with pretty colorful acrylics and spiritual ball caps.

But God doesn’t offer coverings. The God I serve offers transformation (Psalm 51:10-12; Romans 12:1-2). In Him, we are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). The only thing we cover ourselves with is the righteousness of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21). And that, is all you will ever need. It is a polish that doesn’t chip, crack, or fade. Yes, it covers some filth, but in God it is sealed never to be seen again! New as new can be.

Just like spiritual nail polish.
