“For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.” ~ 2 Thessalonians 3:10

There is an old saying about old sayings called cliches, This saying says, “cliches are Cliche because they are good.”

I gotta’ say. Sometimes that is true! But sometimes it is not.

Some good cliches could be the Christian yelling as you pass, “Have a blessed day!”

Sometimes Christians are referred to as “On fire for God!”

Or perhaps you hear after a sermon someone exclaim, “The pastor preached a powerful message. The pastor was Holy Ghost-filled and the Word of the Lord was anointed.”

Wait. Does that one sound right? Shouldn’t pastors, or all Christians for a matter of fact, be Holy Ghost-filled and isn’t the Word of the Lord always anointed?

Or sometimes, you hear, “let go and let God?” Even this cliche can be widely misconstrued. There came a point when the Thessalonians let go a little bit too much waiting on the 2nd coming of Christ and we warned by Paul that if they don’t work, they shouldn’t eat (by the way, that’s not a cliche check 2 Thessalonians 3).

There are numerous examples where cliches can become over repeated, tone death, and insensitive remarks that go on coffee mugs and T-shirts.

Examples?

“You can’t outgive God!” as a pastor calls for a church member to give more.

“If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it!” says the optimistic friend speaking to the young adult who just lost their parent to cancer.

On that same note, “I guess God wanted them more,” is not a good thing to mention when trying to encourage someone who suffered lost.

Now, that I got your attention. I say all this to say. Let us not be cliche Christians. Let us be Biblical Christians, because Scripture is always good (2 Timothy 3:16-17)!
