Annie S. Hawks (1836-1918) and Robert Lowry (1826-1899) together published the hymn ” I Need Thee Every Hour” in 1872. This song is a testament to constant devotion to the Lord and praising Him for all spiritual blessings. Paul spoke of these blessings in Ephesians 1:3 when stating,

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in Heavenly places in Christ.”

This popular hymn just needed a few adjustments, several of which concerned Christ’s presence in us. For example, the original lyric of the 2nd stanza said, “Stay thou nearby.” This implies that God might leave you, but we know that being sealed with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13), this is not possible.

The song continues to say that “temptations lose their power when thou art night,” but we also know that the way to render temptations powerless is to put on the mind of Christ (Philippians 2:5). We changed “voice” to “words” in the first verse to emphasize that it is through the Bible, God speaks to us.

The third verse is sound, we should be able to follow along with Paul in Philippians 4:11-12.

So, we will finish up with Ephesians 6:10:

“Finally, my brethen, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might.”
